Spur Independent School District
Spur Independent School District is a public school district based in Spur, Texas, United States. In addition to Spur, the district also serves the community of McAdoo and a portion of Dickens, as well as rural areas in western and southern Dickens County. A very small portion of Kent County also lies within the district. Spur ISD has one school that serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. On July 1, 1985, portions of the McAdoo Independent School District were incorporated into Spur ISD. In 2009, the school district was rated " academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Spur, Texas
Spur is a city in Dickens County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,318 at the 2010 census, up from 1,088 at the 2000 census. A city council resolution passed July 2014 proclaimed Spur the "nation's first tiny house-friendly town." On October 9, 2009, Spur celebrated its centennial with the dedication of a monumental sculpture of a spur, created by local welder John Grusendorf. The event, sponsored by the Dickens County Historical Commission, was held at Dyess Park off Texas State Highway 70. On March 28, 2017, three storm chasers died when one of them, Kelley Williamson of Cassville, Missouri, drove through a stop sign at high speed and struck a car driven by Corbin Jaeger from Peoria, Arizona. McAdoo, Texas
McAdoo is an unincorporated community in northwestern Dickens County, Texas, United States. History McAdoo is named for the former United States Secretary of the Treasury William Gibbs McAdoo, son-in-law of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. The Texas politician, journalist, and attorney Marshall Formby was reared in McAdoo and is interred there at McAdoo Cemetery. Formby's nephew, Clint Formby, who was also reared in McAdoo, maintained the longest-running radio broadcast by a single host in the United States. Education The McAdoo school was consolidated with the Spur Independent School District in 1985. The former McAdoo Independent School District was disestablished on July 1, 1985. Economy Wind energy Invenergy LLC constructed a 150 MW wind power plant near this community. The project consists of 100 GE 1.5 MW wind turbines and came online in late summer/early fall 2008. Dickens is a city in and the county seat of Dickens County, Texas, United States. The population was 286 at the 2010 census, down from 332 at the 2000 census. Charles Weldon Cannon (1915–1997), a Dickens County native, made his famous boots and saddles in Dickens. Geography Dickens is located west of the center of Dickens County at (33.621341, –100.834987), with the Croton Breaks to the east and Mackenzie Peak to the north. Dickens County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,770. Its county seat is Dickens. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1891. Both the county and its seat are named for J. Dickens, who died at the Battle of the Alamo. The Pitchfork Ranch is in Dickens and adjacent King County. It was managed from 1965 to 1986 by Jim Humphreys, who was also affiliated with the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock.
