Sportsperson Of The Year (Slovakia)
Sportsperson of the Year ( sk, Športovec roka) is a trophy awarded to the best Slovak athletes by the Club of Sports Journalists of the Slovak Syndicate of Journalists. The trophy was founded in 1993, following the annual award Czechoslovak Sportsperson of the Year, which was finished after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. So far the individual trophy has been awarded to 8 different athletes, among which there were 6 men and 2 women (as of 2008). The most successful athletes were Martina Moravcová (swimmer), who achieved it 6 times, and Michal Martikán ( slalom canoeist), who won 4 times. The team trophy has been achieved by teams of 5 different sports disciplines (as of 2008). Michal Martikán
Michal Martikán (; born 18 May 1979) is a Slovak slalom canoeist who has been competing at the international level since 1994. In 1996 he became the first athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. In total he won 5 Olympic medals (2 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze), which is the most among all slalom paddlers. He has also won the World Championship title in the C1 individual category four times. Career At the age of 16, Michal Martikán became the youngest winner of a World Cup slalom canoeing event. Three months later, at age 17, Martikán was in sixth place after the first run of the canoe slalom singles event at the 1996 Olympics. With nothing to lose, he went all out on the second run and just bettered the score of defending champion Lukáš Pollert of the Czech Republic. Ján Volko
Ján Volko (born 2 November 1996) is a Slovak sprinter. He competed in the 60 metres at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships. His biggest successes to date are: the silver medal at the 2017 European Indoor Championships with a new national record of 6.58, the gold medal at the 2019 European Indoor Championships, and the bronze medal at the 2021 European Indoor Championships. In 2020, he became the "face" of the game Athletics Mania by Slovak developer PowerPlay Studio. Volko is a practising Roman Catholic. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. The Slovakia national football team ( sk, Slovenská futbalová reprezentácia) represents Slovakia in men's international football competition and it is governed by the Slovak Football Association (SFZ), the governing body for football in Slovakia. MŠK Žilina () is a Slovak football club based in the town of Žilina, that is playing in the Slovak Superliga. Peter Škantár
Peter Škantár (born 20 July 1982) is a retired Slovak slalom canoeist who competed at the international level from 1998 to 2018, along with his cousin Ladislav Škantár in the C2 class. They retired from canoe slalom in 2018 after the C2 event was discontinued and subsequently switched to wildwater canoeing. They announced retirement from wildwater canoeing during the 2021 World Championships in their hometown Bratislava where they didn't start due to Ladislav's injury. Career He won an Olympic gold medal in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro in the C2 event. He also won ten medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold (C2 team: 2009), five silvers (C2: 2009, 2017; C2 team: 2011, 2013, 2014) and four bronzes (C2: 2011, 2013, 2014; C2 team: 2007).
