Sports Today
''Sports Today'' is a long-running radio show on Melbourne, Australia radio station 3AW. It currently airs on Monday to Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm and is hosted by Gerard Healy and Sam McClure. Previously, it was hosted by David Hookes and Gerard Healy. On the first show after Hookes' death, Healy provided a memorable and emotional ode to his great mate. Dwayne Russell took over the co-host role following this incident in early 2004 and remained as co-host until 2019 when Russell moved to rival station SEN. McClure took over Russell since 2020. It has been running for 12 years and is the highest rating sports radio show in Melbourne. Formerly produced by Jac Woodcock and Ralph Horowitz, its current senior producer is Mike Barrett. Gerard Healy
Gerard Healy (born 1 March 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer and commentator. Healy attended St Bede's College in Mentone, where he was the senior football captain. Gerard is a trained physiotherapist. VFL career Melbourne Demons Beginning his career with the Melbourne Football Club in 1979, Healy played mostly in a forward pocket role in attack before switching to an on-baller/midfielder role and establishing himself as one of the premier ball winners in the competition. Sam McClure
Sam McClure (born 7 July 1991) is an Australian sports journalist who works for the Nine Network, ''The Age,'' 3AW and Sports Entertainment Network. Career McClure began his media career at 3AW as a broadcasting assistant in 2011, before moving into the role of a news reporter at the station and presenting a regular sports news segment alongside Gerard Healy on the program ''Sports Today''. He later became a sports writer for ''The Age'' newspaper in Melbourne. David Hookes
David William Hookes (3 May 1955 – 19 January 2004) grew up in Torrensville and was a South Australian and Australian cricketer, broadcaster and coach of the Victorian cricket team. An aggressive left-handed batsman, Hookes usually batted in the middle order. His international career got off to a sensational start in the Centenary Test at Melbourne in 1977 when he hit England captain Tony Greig for five consecutive boundaries, but a combination of circumstances ensured that he never became a regular in the Australian team. He wrote in his autobiography, "I suspect history will judge me harshly as a batsman because of my modest record in 23 Tests and I can't complain about that". Dwayne Russell
Shane John Russell (born 4 March 1965) known as Dwayne Russell is a former professional Australian rules footballer and currently a commentator of the sport. Born in Adelaide, Russell made his senior football debut as a sixteen-year-old in 1981 for Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), eventually becoming Port Adelaide's vice-captain, before crossing over to Victorian Football League (VFL) club Geelong in 1987. Russell played 50 games, kicking 51 goals for Geelong until he left the club at the end of the 1991 AFL season. Russell initially considered returning to Port Adelaide to finish his career but instead coached in country Victoria for a few years before retiring from football. 1116 SEN (call sign 3AK) is an Australian radio station in Victoria. Owned and operated by Pacific Star Network, it broadcasts a sports radio format from Lower Plenty to Greater Melbourne. First broadcast on 29 November 1931 as 3AK, the station currently broadcasts from studios in South Melbourne. History The station first broadcast on 29 November 1931 as 3AK. Mike Sheahan
Michael Sheahan (born 4 March 1947) is an Australian journalist who specialises in Australian rules football. He was chief football writer and associate sports editor for the ''Herald Sun'' for 18 years. Although he left these positions at the end of 2011, he still writes special columns for the newspaper, including his yearly "Top 50" player list. He was also a panelist on the Fox Footy program '' On the Couch'' and former media director for the Australian Football League (AFL, formerly VFL). Julia Caroline Wilson (born 7 June 1960) is an Australian sports journalist. She is a football columnist for Melbourne's ''The Age'' newspaper, and also appears on 3AW's pre-match AFL discussion, is a panellist on Nine Network's '' Footy Classified'', and an occasional panellist on the ABC program ''Offsiders''. Nathan Charles Buckley (born 26 July 1972) is a former professional Australian rules football coach, player and commentator. He is listed by journalist Mike Sheahan as one of the top 50 players of all time. Tony Shaw (Australian Rules Footballer)
Anthony Shaw (born 23 July 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer, coach and media personality who played for the Collingwood Football Club. Playing career Collingwood Football Club Shaw was recruited to Collingwood from Reservoir-Lakeside to make his debut in 1977 alongside brother Ray. He was a small midfielder at 170 cm who didn't have the natural ability or quality skills of others but his courage and determination made him a fine rover. He did struggle in his early years to cement a senior position in the team. Shaw played in the 1980–1981 losing Grand Final sides. In 1984, Shaw won the Copeland Trophy as the Magpies best and fairest player for the season, as well as playing with second brother Neville. Robert Walls
Robert Walls (born 21 July 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s and 1970s. In a playing career that spanned three decades Robert played a combined 259 games and kicked a total of 444 goals. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he continued to coach in the VFL/AFL for a total of 347 games across four different clubs. As a coach, his greatest achievement came in 1987 when he coached Carlton to the 1987 VFL premiership, the same club he won premierships with as player in 1968, 1970 and 1972. After his coaching career ended, Walls became involved in the AFL media as a commentator and columnist.
