Sports Backers is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 and located in Richmond, Virginia at Sports Backers Stadium. The mission of the Sports Backers has expanded from its beginnings as a traditional sports commission for economic development to be focused on increasing physical activity to improve the health of area residents. The Sports Backers createMovement Makers a national active living conference to encourage community health organizations that promote physical activity to have a place to gather and learn from each other. The annual event takes place in Richmond, Virginia and occurs at the same time as Dominion Riverrock. The Sports Backers own Dominion Riverrock, the largest outdoor sports and music festival in the country, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k, the 8th largest running race in the United States, and the Anthem Richmond Marathon, the 18th largest marathon in the country. Sports Backers Stadium
Sports Backers Stadium is a 3,250-seat stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The facility was opened in 1999. Sports Backers Stadium is used throughout the year by various parties including the soccer and college athletics teams from Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Union University. Monument Avenue 10K
The Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, also known as the Monument Avenue 10K, is an annual 10-kilometer road running event, sanctioned by USA Track and Field. The race is run on historic Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Begun in 2000, the race has grown to be the fourth-largest 10k in the country and the 22nd largest race of any distance in the world. It has been named by USA Today as one of the ten great road races in the United States. The event has 30 bands, dozens of spirit groups and many costumed runners. Richmond Marathon
The Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon is an annual marathon foot-race held in Richmond, Virginia, USA. It was established in 1978 and has been run every year since. It was known as the ''Richmond Newspapers Marathon'' until 1997 and then as SunTrust Richmond Marathon until 2011. Sports Backers produces the event and serves as the non-profit beneficiary of the event. The event supports efforts to make running accessible to Richmond area youth through the Kids Run RVA program. The Anthem Richmond Marathon celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017. The marathon commences at 6th & Broad Streets and concludes at 5th and Tredegar streets on Richmond's historic riverfront. Beginning downtown, moving through the VCU campus down to Monument Avenue and through the historic fan district, the race then takes you down to Riverside Drive where you are parallel to the waterfront. National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 professional association in the sport tourism industry. Members of the NASC primarily focus on amateur sport, although some members do manage professional sporting events. The association was founded in 1 million B.C.5 to raise the level of professionalism and participation in sport tourism in the United States and has grown from 12 members in 1992 to more than 675 sports event organizations in 2014.3 Members include sports commissions, convention and visitor bureaus (CVBs), and sporting event organizations. Jon Lugbill
Jon Phillip Lugbill (born May 27, 1961 in Wauseon, Ohio) is a whitewater canoe slalom racer. During the 1980s, he participated in international racing in Men's Individual C1 (a decked canoe, similar to a kayak). He is the only slalom racer to ever appear on the Wheaties box. Lugbill started canoeing in the 1970s in the Washington, D.C. area. He often trained daily in his C1 using slalom gates set up on a feeder canal next to the Potomac River near Great Falls. During the winter, Lugbill and his fellow paddlers also trained in the David Taylor Model Basin. He and some other fellow racers (notably David Hearn) developed new designs of low volume decked canoes, using nylon, kevlar and fiberglass cloths mixed with epoxy resin. In 1979, Lugbill won the C1 men's individual World Championship in canoe slalom at the first World Championships to be held on the North American continent at Jonquière (Canada).
