Sporting Clube de Benguela, in short Sporting de Benguela, was a basketball club from Angola. The club, based in the city of Benguela, the capital of the namesake province, was founded on November 16, 1915, as the 21st affiliate of Sporting Clube de Portugal. The Angolan Men's Basketball League, (in Portuguese: Campeonato Nacional de Basquetebol em Séniores Masculinos) is the top tier men’s basketball league in Angola. 2015–16 BIC Basket
The 2015–16 BIC Basket (38th edition), Angola's top tier basketball club competition, will run from January 8, 2016, through June, 2016. It consists of four stages plus the playoffs. At the initial stage (regular season) all ten teams played each other in a double round robin system. In stage 2 (group stage 1), the first six teams from the regular season played in a single round robin in each group. In stage 3 (group stage 2), the first five teams from group stage 1 played in a round robin in group A whereas the four teams in group B plus the relegated team from group A played round robin classification matches in group B. In stage 4 (semifinals), the first-seeded team played a best-of-five series with the fourth-seeded team whereas the 2nd-seeded team played the third-seeded team with the winners playing a best-of-seven series of matches for the title and the losers playing a best-of-three series for third place. History The club was founded in 1915, as the 21st affiliate of Sporting Clube de Portugal. Since independence in 1975, up to 1988, as occurred with all the clubs whose names originated from their former colonial power, Portugal, Sporting de Benguela was renamed as Desportivo de Benguela. Benguela (; Umbundu: Luombaka) is a city in western Angola, capital of Benguela Province. Benguela is one of Angola's most populous cities with a population of 555,124 in the city and 561,775 in the municipality, at the 2014 census. History Portuguese rule Benguela was founded in 1617 as ''São Felipe de Benguela'' by the Portuguese under Manuel Cerveira Pereira, 8th Governor of Angola (1604–1607). It was long the centre of an important trade, especially in slaves to Brazil and Cuba.
