Sport In Bulgaria
Bulgaria has established traditions in a great variety of sports. Olympics Bulgaria participates both in the Summer and Winter Olympics, and its first appearance dates back to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, when the Swiss gymnast Charles Champaud represented the country. Since then Bulgaria has appeared in most Summer Olympiads, and has won a total of 224 medals: 54 gold, 88 silver, and 82 bronze. The most successful participations took place at Munich (21 medals), Montreal (22 medals), Moscow (41), Seoul (35). At the Winter Olympic Games, Bulgaria has a less impressive record: only 6 medals (of which only one gold) out of 19 participations. Wrestling
Wrestling is a series of combat sports involving grappling-type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into martial arts, combat sports and military systems. The sport can either be genuinely competitive or sportive entertainment (see professional wrestling). Tanyu Kiryakov
Tanyu Kiryakov ( bg, Таню Киряков, born 2 March 1963) is a Bulgarian pistol shooter, the first shooter to have won Olympic gold medals in both the 50 metre pistol event and the 10 metre air pistol event, in which he was also the first Olympic champion. He is also the only Bulgarian to have won two gold medals from Summer Olympics. Shooting sports is a group of competitive sport, competitive and recreational sporting activities involving proficiency tests of accuracy, precision and speed in shooting — the art of using ranged weapons, mainly small arms (firearms and airguns, in forms such as handguns, rifles and shotguns) and bow and arrow, bows/crossbows. Naim Süleymanoğlu
Naim Süleymanoğlu ( bg, Наим Сюлейманоглу; 23 January 1967 – 18 November 2017) was a Bulgarian-born Turkish Olympic weightlifter. He was a seven-time World Weightlifting champion and a three-time Olympic gold medalist who set 46 world records. At 147 cm in height, Süleymanoğlu's short stature and great strength led to him being nicknamed "Pocket Hercules". He is widely considered as one of the greatest Olympic weightlifters of all time. He is the best pound-for-pound weightlifter in the history of weightlifting. At the 1988 Summer Olympics, Süleymanoğlu set multiple world records in the featherweight division in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total. Yoto Yotov
Yoto Vasilev Yotov ( bg, Йото Василев Йотов, born May 22, 1969) is a Bulgarian–Croatian weightlifter. Yoto Yotov is one of the greatest Bulgarian weightlifters of all time. He is a two-time Olympic silver medalist, three-time world champion, six-time European champion, winner of the 1991 World Cup. Holds a total of 51 medals from the Olympic Games, World and European Championships in total, snatch and clean and jerk - 22 gold, 22 silver and 7 bronze. Because of his long career and many medals, he has been called the Professor. He was elected Athlete of the Year of Bulgaria for 1997. Blagoy Blagoev
Blagoy Blagoev ( bg, Благой Благоев; born 4 December 1956) is a retired Bulgarian weightlifter. Between 1976 and 1984 he claimed seven gold and five silver medals at the Summer Olympics and World and European championships. He set 18 world records. 13 of them were in the snatch. His last snatch world record was 195.5 kg in the 90 kg weight class, set on 1 May 1983 in Varna and remains the heaviest weight ever snatched by a middle heavyweight. Blagoev was a two time Olympian. He represented his native country Bulgaria at the Summer Olympics in Montreal (1976) and in Moscow (1980). He won a silver Olympic medal in the light heavyweight 1980. Asen Zlatev
Asen Zlatev ( bg, Асен Златев; born May 23, 1960) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. Zlatev is an Olympic champion from the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games in Russia, in the category of up to 75 kg. At the age of 11 he joined the first group of weight lifting trainees in the Vasil Levski Sports School under the leadership of Gancho Karushkov. Zlatev has won three gold medals at World Championships (1980, 1982 and 1986) and five at European Championships (1980, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1987). Demir Demirev
Demir Demirev ( bg, Демир Демирев, born 31 August 1984) is a Bulgarian weightlifter. He is of Turkish ethnicity. He participated in the men's -69 kg class at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships and won the bronze medal, finishing behind Vencelas Dabaya and Shi Zhiyong. He snatched 143 kg and clean and jerked an additional 175 kg for a total of 318 kg, 14 kg behind winner Dabaya. Nikolaj Pešalov
Nikolaj Pešalov ( bg, Николай Славеев Пешалов, Nikolay Slaveev Peshalov; born on May 30, 1970) is a Bulgarian-born Croatian Olympic and World former champion in weightlifting. During his long and successful career, Pešalov was World champion eight times in various categories and disciplines, and broke several world records. Stefan Botev
Stefan Khristov Botev ( bg, Стефан Христов Ботев, born February 14, 1968, in Harmanli) is an Olympic Games, Olympic Olympic weightlifting, weightlifter who represented Bulgaria and later for Australia. He was coached by Ivan Abadzhiev. Botev was originally intended to represent Bulgaria at the Weightlifting at the 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 Olympic Games in the heavyweight category. Two of his teammates who had won gold medals in their weight classes tested positive for banned substances, and the Bulgarian weightlifting federation pulled the rest of the team out of the competition the day before Botev was scheduled to compete.
