Spook Ranch
''Spook Ranch'' is a 1925 American silent Western film directed by Edward Laemmle (Carl Laemmle's nephew) and starring Hoot Gibson. It was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film featured a white actor in blackface (Ed Cowles) playing Hoot Gibson's black sidekick, George Washington Black. Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle persuaded his nephew Edward to enter the family business in 1915, after which he specialized mostly in directing westerns. Actress Helen Ferguson retired from acting in 1930 and became a Hollywood publicist. Hoot Gibson enjoyed a sensational career as a major Western star in the 1920s and early 1930s, but wound up dying penniless in 1962, from cancer. Plot In a small mining town in the West, the sheriff orders a cowboy named Bill Bangs (Hoot Gibson) and his Negro sidekick to investigate a haunted ranch. Edward Laemmle
Edward Laemmle (October 25, 1887 – April 2, 1937) was an American film director of the silent era. He directed more than 60 films between 1920 and 1935. Biography Edward Laemmle was born in Chicago, Illinois and died in Los Angeles. He was the nephew of Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal Studios. His half sister was Carla Laemmle, dancer and actress and his brother was director Ernst Laemmle. He married Peppi Heller on April 8, 1923; the couple had two girls, Constance and Carlotta, and settled in Beverly Hills, California. Robert McKim (actor)
Robert McKim (1877 – June 4, 1927) was an American actor of the silent film era and a performer in vaudeville. He appeared in nearly 100 films between 1915 and 1927. He played the arch villain opposite Douglas Fairbanks's Zorro in '' The Mark of Zorro'' in 1920. Biography McKim was born in 1877 in San Jacinto, California and attended schools in San Francisco. He acted with stock theater companies in California, beginning with the Alcazar Stock Company, before he worked in films, beginning with the Ince and Triangle companies. McKim starred with Lon Chaney in the 1923 silent version of ''All The Brothers Were Valiant''. One of his last roles was again as a villain in the unfinished silent ''The Mysterious Island'', starring Lionel Barrymore based on the Jules Verne novel. Dick Sutherland (born Archibald Thomas Johnson, December 23, 1881 – February 3, 1934) was an American film actor, active mostly during the silent film era. Born in Benton, Kentucky, in 1881, Sutherland appeared in more than 70 films between 1921 and 1932. Sutherland died at his home in Hollywood, California, from a heart attack, at the age of 52. He was survived by his wife, Verba, and three sons, Harry, Everett, and Lester. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
