August Spies
August Vincent Theodore Spies (, ; December 10, 1855November 11, 1887) was an American upholsterer, radical labor activist, and newspaper editor. Spies is remembered as one of the anarchists in Chicago who were found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder following a bomb attack on police in an event remembered as the Haymarket affair. Spies was one of four who were executed in the aftermath of this event. Ben Spies
Ben Spies (; born July 11, 1984), is an American former professional motorcycle road racer. He was sometimes nicknamed "Elbows" due to his riding style, in which his elbows protruded outward. Spies won the AMA Superbike Championship for Yoshimura Suzuki in , and successfully defended it in and . For 2009 he raced in the Superbike World Championship series for the Yamaha Italia team; winning the championship in his rookie year by six points over rival Noriyuki Haga. He started racing on Yamaha YSR50cc bikes with the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association in Texas when he was 8 years old. On October 26, 2013, Spies announced his retirement from motorcycle racing after two debilitating crashes left him with permanent shoulder injuries. Leo Spies (4 June 1899 – 1 May 1965) was a Russian-born German composer and conductor active in the musical and theatrical life of Germany, and especially in Berlin. Life and career Spies was born in Moscow to a German diplomat and his wife. He had an older brother Walter Spies, who became an artist and musicologist, and from 1923 lived in Indonesia (then Dutch who spent most of his career in Bali, and sister Daisy Spies, who became a ballet dancer. He and his siblings were educated in Moscow before the family returned to Germany, where they settled in Dresden. There Spies trained with Johannes Schreyer and Oskar von Riesemann. Jantje Wilhelmina Elisabeth "Liesbeth" Spies (born 6 April 1966) is a Dutch politician. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), she has served as Mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn since 2014. She served as Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the Cabinet Rutte I from 16 December 2011 to 5 November 2012. She was named to this post on 16 December 2011, following the appointment of her predecessor, Piet Hein Donner, to be the new Vice-President of the Council of State. Moritz Von Spies
Moritz Ritter von Spies (31 December 1805 – 10 October 1862) was a Bavarian Major General and twice War Minister under Maximilian II of Bavaria. Spies was born in Ansbach. After holding several officer positions in the Bavarian army, also in Greece, which was governed by prince regent Otto, and in the federal war ministry of the Frankfurt Parliament, in 1859 he was promoted Major General in the Generalquartiermeister's staff. In 1860 he was given the command of the genie troops. Spies served as war minister of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 12 June to 11 December 1861 and from 16 June to 10 October 1862 (his death). Pierre Johan Spies (born 8 June 1985 in Pretoria) is a retired South African rugby union player. Walter Spies
Walter Spies (15 September 1895 – 19 January 1942) was a Russian-born German primitivist painter, composer, musicologist, and curator. In 1923 he moved to Java, Indonesia. He lived in Yogyakarta and then in Ubud, Bali starting from 1927, when Indonesia was under European colonial rule as the Dutch East Indies. Spies is often credited with attracting the attention of Western cultural figures to Balinese culture and art in the 1930s, as he became internationally known and hosted numerous anthropologists, actors, artists and other cultural figures. Spies influenced the direction of Balinese art and drama. After the outbreak of war in Europe, Spies was arrested as a German national and interned by the Dutch authorities as an enemy alien.
