Spellbound (Split Enz Album)
''Spellbound'', very often subtitled on the cover as "The Very Best Of Split Enz", is a 1997 compilation album by New Zealand rock band Split Enz. Apparently intended to be the final word on Split Enz compilations, it is the band's most comprehensive career survey. Featured amongst the album's 39 tracks are all the hits, live favourites, choice album tracks and a few rarities, all selected by members of the band. Similar to the band's 1980 album ''True Colours'', ''Spellbound'' was released with different colour combos for the cover: blue & yellow, red & green, purple & orange, and black & cream (the last one being the only combo available for the cassette version), while the 1999 New Zealand reissue featured a special black & silver cover. Split Enz
Split Enz were a New Zealand rock band formed in Auckland in 1972 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd and had a variety of other members during its existence. Originally started as a folk-oriented group with quirky art rock stylings, the band built a strong regional following, noted for their outlandish costumes and makeup. After Tim Finn's brother Neil joined as co-lead vocalist and songwriter, the band came to embrace a more streamlined and pop-oriented approach and became pioneers of new wave. The band achieved worldwide indie stardom in the 1980s, with particular success in New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Late Last Night
"Late Last Night" was a single originally recorded by New Zealand band Split Enz in Australia in 1976. Written by Phil Judd, it was accompanied by the band's first promotional video clip. The single was a minor hit on the Australian Top 100, reaching number 93. The song was re-recorded in London later the same year for the album '' Second Thoughts''. ''Mental Notes'' is the debut studio album by New Zealand band Split Enz. The album cover was painted by band member Phil Judd. Original vinyl copies featured Judd saying "Make a mental note" in the runout groove of the record's second side, causing the phrase to be looped ad infinitum on manual turntables until the stylus is removed. Recording Chunn later complained about the "totally unsympathetic treatment we'd had when we were recording in Australia. The engineer in Sydney thought we couldn't tune our guitars and that we were unprofessional and he just showed total disinterest right through." Much of the material derived from Tim Finn's and Phil Judd's fascination with the work of the renowned English writer and artist Mervyn Peake – notably "Spellbound" the epic track "Stranger Than Fiction" (their concert centrepiece) and "Titus", named after the hero of Peake's ''Gormenghast'' trilogy. "My Mistake" is a 1977 song by New Zealand art rock group Split Enz. It was released in September 1977 as the lead single from their studio album '' Dizrythmia''. "My Mistake" was the first Split Enz song to achieve a top 20 chart position, peaking at #15 in Australia and #21 in the band's native New Zealand. Music video The music video for "My Mistake" has a cabaret style. It begins with most of the group in front of a stage playing the music in a dimly lit amphitheatre. Tim Finn walks onto stage and begins to sing. The stage lights up eventually and all the band members can be seen. Throughout the video, Tim Finn performs 'magic tricks' assisted by editing (such as disappearing and appearing items). As is heard on the album version of the song, Finn then scats along with the trumpet solo performed by band member Robert Gillies. ''Dizrythmia'' (1977) is the third studio album released by New Zealand new wave band Split Enz. It was the first Split Enz album without co-founding members Phil Judd and Mike Chunn. Neil Finn and Nigel Griggs, the first being the younger brother of band leader Tim Finn, replaced them respectively. Meanwhile, Nigel's old friend and former bandmate Malcolm Green took the place of Emlyn Crowther, who also left around this time. The album was released domestically by Mushroom Records, and overseas by Chrysalis Records. The single " My Mistake" was a hit in New Zealand and Australia, but failed to make much impact overseas. "Bold as Brass" was the second single. The album is regarded as the start of the band's breakthrough, and marked a shift from art rock to more pop-oriented songs. History Never Repeats
"History Never Repeats" is a single written by Neil Finn and recorded by Split Enz. It was released in March 1981 as the second single from their sixth studio album, '' Waiata.'' The song remains one of their most popular. It was also used as the title of two compilation albums by the band. The guitar bridge in this song, played by Neil Finn, was originally featured in an old Phil Judd song, "Bergen Aan Zee". The band only played the latter song live. The video was the 12th to be played by MTV upon its launch in 1981. In 2001 the song was voted by members of APRA as the 57th best New Zealand song of the 20th century. I Walk Away
"I Walk Away" is a song written by Neil Finn, and originally recorded by Finn's group Split Enz. It was released in September 1984 as the lead single from their tenth and final studio album ''See Ya 'Round'', and was a chart hit in New Zealand and Australia. Finn's next group, Crowded House, re-recorded the song for the North American version of their self-titled debut album of 1986. (''See Ya 'Round'' was not issued in the U.S., and therefore the song "I Walk Away" was new to U.S. audiences.) "I Walk Away" was not included on the original Australian/NZ release of ''Crowded House'', but all later re-issues of the album in all countries include "I Walk Away" as a standard track. The Crowded House version of the song is slightly rewritten from the original Split Enz version, and features a different verse. The song The lyrics concerned a young man who had fallen in love with a girl on another planet, who he had only discovered existed when tuning his radio, and his regret that they will never meet face to face.
