Spellbound (1916 Film)
''Spellbound'' or ''The One-Eyed God'', is a 1916 American crime drama silent black and white film directed by Harry Harvey and produced by E.D. Horkheimer and H.M. Horkheimer. It is written by Bess Meredyth. With another numerous films, ''Spellbound'' appropriated the medical, legal and literary tales of hypnotic crime. Oscar Cooper, in his review for ''Motion Picture News'', doesn't bother to comment the story and acting and he offers some praise for the lighting and photography. ''The Salt Lake Tribune'' claimed that the fantastic story did not preclude at least one nod to reality. Bess Meredyth
Bess Meredyth (born Helen Elizabeth MacGlashen, February 12, 1890 – July 13, 1969) was a screenwriter and silent film actress. The wife of film director Michael Curtiz, Meredyth wrote ''The Affairs of Cellini'' (1934) and adapted ''The Unsuspected'' (1947). She was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Early life Meredyth began her involvement in performing and writing from an early age. Her father was the manager at a local theatre, and she studied piano throughout her childhood. After encouragement from her English teacher, Meredyth also pursued fiction writing. At the age of 13, she approached the local newspaper editor about writing a fiction column. Each story she wrote for the paper earned her a dollar, making this her first paid work as a writer. Frank Erlanger (March 25, 1882 – 1961), also credited as Frank A. Erlanger or Frank Charles Erlanger was a Hungarian-American silent film actor best known for his work with the Balboa Amusement Producing Company. Early life The Erlangers were a well-established Hungarian family living in what was then Austria-Hungary. Frank's father, Ottmar, was a colonel in the 7th Regiment of the Imperial and Royal Hussars. His mother, Theresia de Retsky, was an actress. The family originally resided in Budapest but relocated to Vienna before or after Frank's birth. While Frank's family, including sister Elizabeth, remained there, he was sent to Prague for schooling. After six years at the Mozart Dramatic College, he joined the military, rising to the rank of lieutenant in the 7th Hussars.
