A nickname is a substitute for the proper name of a familiar person, place or thing. Commonly used to express affection, a form of endearment, and sometimes amusement, it can also be used to express defamation of character. As a concept, it is distinct from both pseudonym and stage name, and also from a title (for example, City of Fountains), although there may be overlap in these concepts. Speedy Atkins
Charles Henry "Speedy" Atkins (1875–1928) was an American tobacco worker in Paducah, Kentucky. A pauper at his death, he drowned in the Ohio River. The city turned over his body for a pauper's burial to his friend A.Z. Hamock, the only African-American undertaker in town. Hamock preserved Atkins' body in an experiment with preservatives, and occasionally displayed it after his death. Hamock's wife had custody of the remains for 45 years, during which Atkins' mummy acquired increasing notoriety. His body was finally buried in 1994, 66 years after he drowned. The event was covered by national media and TV. Biography Charles Atkins was born in Tennessee and, as an adult, moved to Kentucky to find work. Not much is known about his life. Speedy Claxton
Craig Elliott "Speedy" Claxton (born May 8, 1978) is an American former professional basketball player and the current head coach of the Hofstra University men's basketball team. Claxton won an NBA championship in 2003 as a member of the San Antonio Spurs. In 2013, he was named as a special assistant to the head coach for the Hofstra University men's basketball program, before being hired as head coach in 2021. College Prior to his NBA career, Claxton played at Hofstra University under future Villanova University coach Jay Wright. At Hofstra, Claxton led the Flying Dutchmen to the America East Championship, where they defeated the University of Delaware in the championship game at Hofstra Arena. Speedy Duncan
Leslie Herbert "Speedy" Duncan (August 10, 1942 – December 9, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a cornerback and return specialist in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Jackson State University. Duncan played seven seasons with the San Diego Chargers, where he was a three-time AFL All-Star. He was also named to the Pro Bowl with the Washington Redskins. Duncan was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame and was named to their 40th and 50th anniversary teams. Playing career Duncan was a standout player at Druid High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He attended Jackson State University, where he played for the Tigers. Herschel Haworth Jr. (May 16, 1922 – February 26, 2008), better known as Speedy Haworth, was an American guitarist and singer who was involved with the golden age of country music broadcasting in the Ozarks. He was a featured cast member of ABC-TV's ''Ozark Jubilee'' from 1955–1960 and is a member of the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame. Biography Early years Haworth was born on May 15, 1922 in Springfield, Missouri at home. His father, Herschel Haworth, was a carpenter of English ancestry. His mother was Vancie Martha Haworth (née Wilson), whose family came to Missouri in a covered wagon from the hills of Tennessee and settled in Nixa, Missouri. William "Speedy" Morris (born April 26, 1942) is an American basketball coach. Born in Manayunk, Morris acquired the nickname "Speedy" because he was one of the slowest kids in his neighborhood. Morris started coaching at St. John the Baptist Catholic School's CYO varsity basketball team. He then went on to coach at Roman Catholic High School. Morris was then asked to be head coach of La Salle University's women's basketball team. He was head coach of the La Salle University men's team from 1986 to 2001, where he led the Explorers to four NCAA tournament appearances. Morris's 238 wins are the most in school history. His best team was the 1989–90, led by Lionel Simmons and Doug Overton, which posted a 30–2 record and finished 12th in both major polls. Jeret Peterson
Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (December 12, 1981 – July 25, 2011) was an American World Cup aerial skier from Boise, Idaho, skiing out of Bogus Basin. A three-time Olympian, he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Peterson was found dead by suicide in Lambs Canyon, a remote canyon between Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah on July 25, 2011. The cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Athletic career Through the 2006 season, Peterson had won four World Cup events in aerials, and a total of nine World Cup podiums. Kenneth J. "Speedy" Smith Jr. (born January 28, 1993) is an American professional basketball player for Hapoel Jerusalem of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Year in 2015. Early life Smith was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida and attended Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport. Louis "Speedy" Timothy Thomas (April 13, 1947July 29, 2003) was a professional American football wide receiver in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). He played for the AFL's Cincinnati Bengals (1969) and the NFL's Bengals (1970–1972) and New Orleans Saints (1973–1974). Thomas played football at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas. He played college football at the University of Utah. During his senior season (1968), he was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and he was selected to play in the annual all-star East-West Shrine Game.
