Speed Skating At The 1956 Winter Olympics – Men's 5000 Metres
The 5000 metres speed skating event was part of the speed skating at the 1956 Winter Olympics programme. The competition was held on naturally frozen ice on the Lake Misurina. It was held on Sunday, 29 January 1956, started at 11 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. Forty-six speed skaters from 17 nations competed. Medalists Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1956 Winter Olympics. ''(*)'' The record was set in a high altitude venue (more than 1000 metres above sea level) and on naturally frozen ice. ''(**)'' The record was set on naturally frozen ice. At first Helmut Kuhnert who skated in the first pair set a new Olympic record with 8:04.3 minutes. In the third pair Wim de Graaff bettered the Olympic record with 8:00.2 minutes. Lake Misurina
Lake Misurina ( it, Lago di Misurina; Cadorino dialect: ''Lago de Meśorìna'') is the largest natural lake of the Cadore and it is 1,754 m above sea level, near Auronzo di Cadore (Belluno). The lake's perimeter is 2.6 km long, while the maximum depth is 5 m. Near the lake there are about ten hotels with accommodation for around 500 people. The particular climatic characteristics of the area around the lake make particularly good air for those who have respiratory diseases. Near the lake is the only center in Italy for the care of childhood asthma. The lake was the theme of a famous song by Claudio Baglioni. Lake Misurina is also the theme of the theatrical representation of the Longane di Lozzo. Willem "Wim" de Graaff (25 August 1931 – 12 January 2021) was a Dutch speed skater who competed in the 1956 Winter Olympics and in the 1960 Winter Olympics. He was born and died in Rotterdam. In 1956 he finished fourth in the 5000 metres event, eleventh in the 1500 metres competition, 18th in the 10000 metres contest, and 43rd in the 500 metres event. Dmitry Sakunenko (russian: Дмитрий Сакуненко; 7 January 1930 – 13 September 2014) was a Russian Soviet speed skater. At an international meet at Medeo 9–10 January 1955, Sakunenko was the first person to skate the 5000-m below eight minutes, with 7:54.9. In a later pair, Boris Shilkov improved this world record to 7:45.6. On this occasion Sakunenko set a new samalogue world record with the series 42.6, 7:54.9, 2:13.0, 16:44.3 (184.638 points). John "Johnny" Dennis Cronshey (14 July 1926, in Brentford, England – 15 January 2004, in Axminster, Devon, England) was an English speed skater. He competed at the 1948 Winter Olympics and the 1956 Winter Olympics. Cronshey attended his first international all-round championship at the age of 20. Colin Hickey
Colin Edward Hickey (3 July 1931 – 13 January 1999) was an Australian speed skater. He represented Australia at the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Winter Olympics. His seventh place in the 1956 Winter Olympics was Australia's best result until 1976. He was born in Fairfield, Victoria. Hickey became a "rink rat" when his father took him to the Glaciarium in Melbourne. "I felt an affinity with it" he recalled, saying "To do it well is to feel like a bird flying." He earned the money to buy skates from selling newspapers. To get to the Glacarium from his place in Fairfield, he had to walk, take a bus and then a train. He tried ice hockey, but because of his small frame (he grew up to be 162 centimetres and weigh 56 kilograms), he was overlooked, and took up speed skating. Biography Born in Oslo and representing the skating club ASK (''Arbeidernes Skøyteklubb'' – later called ''Aktiv Skøyteklubb'') Johannesen won the World Allround Championships in 1957 and 1964, the European Allround Championships in 1959 and 1960, and won the Norwegian Allround Championships eight times (1955 and 1957–1963). He was Olympic Champion twice – on the 10,000 m at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley and on the 5,000 m at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.
