Speed Skating At The 1932 Winter Olympics
At the 1932 Winter Olympics, four speed skating events were contested. For the only time in the Olympic history, the speed skating were held as pack-style events, having all competitors skate at the same time. Women were allowed to compete in speed skating for the first time in history in a set of demonstration events. The IOC was reluctant to upgrade women’s events to full medal events, although the organizing committee of the Games advocated for the full inclusion of women’s events. The distances for women were 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m. The pack-style racing would pave the way for short track speed skating, that would debut as a demonstration event at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary before becoming an official Olympic event at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. Irving Jaffee
Irving Warren Jaffee (September 15, 1906 in New York City – March 20, 1981 in San Diego, California) was an American speed skater who won two gold medals at the 1932 Winter Olympics, becoming the most successful athlete there along with his compatriot Jack Shea. Early life Jaffee, who was Jewish, was born to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Russia in 1896. He grew up in the Crotona Park section of The Bronx, where he played baseball with future Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg. He briefly attended DeWitt Clinton High School, but dropped out after failing to make the varsity baseball team. Career At age 14, Jaffee took up skating at the Gay Blades of Iceland rink (which later became the Roseland Ballroom). Helen Bina (May 19, 1912 – March 15, 1983) was an American speed skater who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics. She competed at the women's speed skating events at the 1932 Winter Olympics which were held as demonstration sport. Dorothy Franey
Dorothy “Dot” Franey Langkop (October 25, 1913 in St. Paul, Minnesota – January 10, 2011 in Dallas, Texas) was an American speed skater who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics. Biography As she was from St. Paul, like other skaters from downriver, she wore the colors of the Hippodrome Skating Club. While there was an ice rink on Lake Como in St. Paul, rode her best performances at the ice on Powderhorn Lake in Minneapolis. She was at her best by the 1930s. In 1932, she competed in the women's speed skating events which were held as demonstration sport. She finished third in the 1000 metres event and fifth in the 1500 metres competition. She also participated in the 500 metres event but was eliminated in the heats. Kit Klein
Catherine "Kit" Klein (March 28, 1910 – April 13, 1985) was an American speed skater. Short biography Kit Klein was born in Buffalo, New York and started competing on the local level. Later, Klein finished first in the 1500 metres event and third in the 500 metres competition at the 1932 Winter Olympics of Lake Placid, where speed skating for women was a demonstration sport. She also participated in the 1000 metres event but was eliminated in the heats. She also won the 1,000 m race, as well as the overall bronze medal, at the Unofficial World Allround Championships in Oslo, Norway in 1935. At the 1936 first official World Allround Speed Skating Championships for Women in Stockholm, Sweden, Klein won gold. After the 1936 Winter Olympics, Klein toured Europe before sailing home. Jean Wilson (speed Skater)
Jean Wilson was an Olympic Speed Skater. She was born on July 19, 1910, in Glasgow but her family emigrated to Canada when she was a child. She began to skate at the age of 15 and represented Canada at the 1932 Olympics where Women's speed skating was a demonstration event. She won the 500 metre event, broke the Olympic record on two occasions on the way to claiming second place in the 1,500 metres and fell, while in the lead, just before the finish line in the 1,000 metres after Kit Klein from the United States. She developed myasthenia gravis, an auto immune disease and died on September 3, 1933, at the age of 23. Demonstration Sport
A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games, but may also occur at other sporting events. Demonstration sports were officially introduced in the 1912 Summer Olympics, when Sweden decided to include glima, traditional Icelandic wrestling, in the Olympic program, but with its medals not counting as official. Most organizing committees then decided to include at least one demonstration sport at each edition of the Games, usually some typical or popular sport in the host country, like baseball at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and taekwondo at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Frank Stack (speed Skater)
Frank Stack (January 1, 1906 – January 25, 1987) was a Canadian speed skater. He competed at the 1932, 1948 and 1952 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 10000 m in 1932, placing fourth in the 500 m and 1500 m and seventh in the 5000 m events. He missed the 1936 Games due to lack of funds to travel to Berlin. Stack took up skating at the age of 13, following his father Jack, who was also a competitive speed skater. Frank was the Western Canadian Junior Champion in 1919–1923 and senior champion in 1924–1929. In 1931, 1932 and 1938 he won North American Indoor Championships. He semi-retired in 1954, but returned to competitions in 1966, aged 60, and had five podium finishes at the Canadian Indoor Championships. While competing Stack worked as a speed skating coach and prepared the national team to the 1952 and 1960 Winter Olympics.
