''Speed'' is a 1922 American action film serial directed by George B. Seitz. The story is a typically convoluted serial plot. Speed Stansbury is heir to a large fortune. A master criminal hires someone to frame Speed for murder and bank robbery. As Speed pursues the man who can prove his innocence to South America, he himself is followed by Lucy, the woman he loves. This is a list of film serials by studio, separated into those released by each of the five major studios, and the remaining minor studios. The five major studios produced the greater number of serials. Of these the main studios are considered to be Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Republic Pictures. All three were active during the 1930s and 1940s. The other two major studios are Mascot Pictures, which later merged into Republic, and Pathé Exchange, which ceased serial production before the advent of sound. Harry Semels
Harry Semels (November 20, 1887 – March 2, 1946) was an American film actor. He appeared in over 315 film between 1917 and 1946. Career Semels appeared in his first film in 1917. He began to achieve fame after arriving at Columbia Pictures, appearing in several Three Stooges shorts including ''Disorder in the Court'', ''Wee Wee Monsieur'' and ''Three Little Sew and Sews''. He also appeared in feature films like ''Road to Morocco'', ''The Princess and the Pirate'' and ''The Kid from Brooklyn''. A versatile character actor, Semels often appeared as villains, waiters, soldiers, lawyers, et al. Personal life Semels was Jewish and had two children, Ruth and David, who was killed in action during World War II. Death Semels died of a heart attack on March 2, 1946, in Hollywood, California. Charles Hutchison
Charles Hutchison (December 3, 1879 – May 30, 1949) was an American film actor, director and screenwriter. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1914 and 1944. He also directed 33 films between 1915 and 1938. Though he directed numerous independent silent features, he is best remembered today as Pathé's leading male serial star from 1918 to 1922. In 1923 he went to Britain and made two films ''Hutch Stirs 'em Up'' and ''Hurricane Hutch in Many Adventures'' for the Ideal Film Company. He made one last serial in 1926, ''Lightning Hutch'', for distribution by the Arrow Film Corporation. It was meant to be a comeback vehicle, but the production company went into bankruptcy just as it was released. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died in Hollywood, California. He was the person who convinced actor Karl Dane to return to films in the mid-1920s. A serial film, film serial (or just serial), movie serial, or chapter play, is a motion picture form popular during the first half of the 20th century, consisting of a series of short subjects exhibited in consecutive order at one theater, generally advancing weekly, until the series is completed. Generally, each serial involves a single set of characters, protagonistic and antagonistic, involved in a single story, which has been edited into chapters after the fashion of serial fiction and the episodes cannot be shown out of order or as a single or a random collection of short subjects. Each chapter was screened at a movie theater for one week, and ended with a cliffhanger, in which characters found themselves in perilous situations with little apparent chance of escape.
