''Speechless'' is a 2011 play by British playwrights Linda Brogan and Polly Teale. It was based on ''The Silent Twins'' by Marjorie Wallace, telling the story of June and Jennifer Gibbons. Its premiere was a national tour of the UK from 20 September to 26 November 2011, in a Shared Experience-Sherman Cymru The Sherman Theatre ( cy, Theatr y Sherman) is a venue in the Cathays district of Cardiff. It was built as a twin-auditorium venue in 1973 with financial support from Cardiff University. Polly Teale (born December 1962) is a British theatre director and playwright best known for her work with the Shared Experience theatre company, of which she was an artistic director. Career In 2002, Teale directed a production of Helen Edmundson's award-winning play ''The Clearing'' at the Tricycle Theatre. In 2012, she directed Edmundson's ''Mary Shelley'', which was produced by Shared Experience on tour, including at the Tricycle Theatre and the Liverpool Playhouse. Marjorie Shiona Wallace, CBE (born January 1943) is a British investigative journalist, author, and broadcaster. She is also the Founder and Chief Executive of mental health charity SANE. Early life and education Wallace was born in Nairobi, British Kenya, where her father was a civil engineer mapping the railways. Her mother was a classical pianist. After studying music, Wallace graduated with a degree in Psychology and Philosophy from University College London. Career Journalism Early career After graduating, Wallace worked as a trainee producer for ''The Frost Programme'' with David Frost. June Gibbons (born 11 April 1963) and Jennifer Gibbons (11 April 1963 – 9 March 1993) were identical twins who grew up in Wales. They became known as "The Silent Twins", since they only communicated with each other. They wrote works of fiction. Both women were admitted to Broadmoor Hospital, where they were held for eleven years. Early life June and Jennifer were the daughters of Caribbean immigrants Gloria and Aubrey Gibbons. The Gibbons family moved from Barbados to the United Kingdom in the early 1960s, as part of the Windrush generation. Gloria was a housewife and Aubrey worked as a technician for the Royal Air Force. The couple also had three other children: Greta was born in 1957, David was born in 1959, and Rosie was born in 1967. In 1960 Aubrey went to stay with a relative in Coventry and soon qualified as a staff technician. Gloria followed, with Greta and David, several months later. Sherman Cymru
The Sherman Theatre ( cy, Theatr y Sherman) is a venue in the Cathays district of Cardiff. It was built as a twin-auditorium venue in 1973 with financial support from Cardiff University. Sherman Cymru was the name of the Sherman Theatre between 2007 and 2016 when the name changed back to Sherman Theatre. The theatre is named after Harry Sherman, the co-founder of Sherman's Football Pools, who financed its construction. Within the premises are two performance spaces: the main auditorium with 452 seats, and the studio / arena which seats 100. The Sherman Theatre Company and Sgript Cymru merged in April 2007 to form a new company, called Sherman Cymru, based at the Sherman Theatre. Between 1990 and 2006 the Artistic Director of the Sherman was Phil Clark. Between 1993 and 97 a number of plays were filmed for television by HTV under the series title ''The Sherman Plays''. Arcola Theatre
Arcola Theatre is an Off West End theatre in the London Borough of Hackney. It presents plays, operas and musicals featuring established and emerging artists. The theatre building, in the former Colourworks paint factory on Ashwin Street, Dalston, houses two studio theatre spaces, two rehearsal studios and a café-bar. In 2021 the theatre opened Arcola Outside, also on Ashwin Street. The theatre runs one of East London's most extensive arts engagement programmes.
