Spectacle Theater
Spectacle Theater is a collectively run, independent movie theater that operates out of a small space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in New York, United States. History Spectacle Theater opened in September 2010 at 124 S. 3rd Street in Brooklyn in a space that used to be a bodega. From its beginning, the theater was dedicated to showing rare, independent, or arthouse films (that cannot be found on DVD) at $5 per ticket. In 2013, Spectacle was awarded the "Best Weird Repertory Film Programming" by ''The Village Voice''. After a rent increase and lease-mandated improvements in 2015, the theater ran a Kickstarter campaign to keep operating out of the same space in central Williamsburg. The campaign was successful and the theater stayed open at its location at 124 S. 3rd Street. Kung fu film () is a subgenre of martial arts films and Hong Kong action cinema set in the contemporary period and featuring realistic martial arts. A repertory theatre is a theatre in which a resident company presents works from a specified repertoire, usually in alternation or rotation. United Kingdom Annie Horniman founded the first modern repertory theatre in Manchester after withdrawing her support from the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Horniman's Gaiety Theatre, Manchester, Gaiety Theatre opened its first season in September of 1908. The opening of the Gaiety was followed by the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow and the Liverpool Repertory Theatre. Previously, regional theatre relied on mostly London touring ensembles. The Motion Picture Association film rating system is used in the United States and its territories to rate a motion picture's suitability for certain audiences based on its content. Sidney Sokhona (born 1952) is a Mauritanian filmmaker and politician. Life Sokhona shot his first feature film, ''Nationality: Immigration'', from 1972 to 1975 as an immigrant in Paris. Sarah Minter
Sarah Minter (born 1953 in Puebla, Mexico, died 2016) was a Mexican filmmaker and artist. Career Minter produced 8mm and 16mm films, video installations, and documentaries that displayed intersections of the body, politics, and the city. Her first contact with video was when she filmed Super 8. Her artworks display the evolution of video and express themes of intimacy, marginalization, and different perceptions. She studied cinematography at the National Autonomous University of Mexico film school in Mexico City. Minter's career began in the 1970s when she joined the experimental group Ergónico. While she was a part of this group, she was able to have her first contact with video and developed a strong liking for it. The medium was affordable and unrestricted in terms of structure, which is something that she enjoyed. Katrina Del Mar
Katrina del Mar is a New York–based American photographer, video artist, writer and award-winning filmmaker. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship in Video, and her films have been screened at numerous festivals internationally. Del Mar has been described as "the lesbian Russ Meyer." Her aesthetic is informed by riot grrrl and 1970s punk. Early life Del Mar grew up in Wisconsin and New Jersey. She is the daughter of American painter William P. Campbell. Tadeusz Konwicki
Tadeusz Konwicki (22 June 1926 – 7 January 2015) was a Polish writer and film director, as well as a member of the Polish Language Council. Life Konwicki was born in 1926 as the only son of Jadwiga Kieżun and Michał Konwicki in Nowa Wilejka, where he spent his early childhood. His father died early and Konwicki lived with his great-aunt and great-uncle who he later depicted in his novels. He attended a local King Zygmunt August gymnasium. Immediately following the outbreak of World War II, Wilno was occupied by the Soviet Union and subsequently by Nazi Germany, and all education for Poles was discontinued. Konwicki continued his studies underground and joined the eighth Oszmiana Brigade of the Home Army that took part in the nationwide guerrilla operation code-named Operation Tempest and Operation Ostra Brama. Andrew Horn (September 16, 1952 – August 24, 2019) was an American film producer, director and writer. He was the winner of the 2004 Teddy Award for ''The Nomi Song'' in the category Best Documentary Film. In 2014, he directed ''We Are Twisted Fucking Sister!'', a documentary about American heavy metal band Twisted Sister. Career A New Yorker by birth, Horn studied at NYU. He moved to Berlin, Germany in 1989 for a fellowship program. His Emmy-winning film research were included on projects by BBC, Channel 4, PBS, HBO and the Paul Robeson, Paul Robeson Foundation alongside films by Spike Lee and Michael Moore. Rogério Sganzerla
Rogério Sganzerla (4 May 1946 — 9 January 2004) was a Brazilian filmmaker. One of the main names of the '' cinema marginal'' underground movement, his most known work is ''The Red Light Bandit'' (1968). Sganzerla was influenced by Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, and José Mojica Marins, and often used clichés from film noir and pornochanchadas. Irony, narrative subversion and collage were trademarks of his film aesthetics. Biography Sganzerla was born in Joaçaba, in the state of Santa Catarina.
