Special Affect
Special Affect (originally called Special Affects) was an American new wave band active from the late 1970s until 1981. They were notable for comprising the earliest-known recordings of future Ministry founder Al Jourgensen, future My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult vocalist Frank Nardiello, future Concrete Blonde drummer Harry Rushakoff, and bassist Martin Sorenson. The band released a 7" EP called ''Mood Music'' in 1979. This release features original guitarist Tom Hoffman, who left the band in 1979 and was replaced by Jourgensen. "Vertigo Feeling", from this EP, would eventually be widely released on the Rykodisc CD ''Industrial Family Platter!'', a compilation of songs by Ministry and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Special Affect's only album, ''Too Much Soft Living'', which was released in 1981, was advertised as the original soundtrack to a film of the same name; however, no such film exists. Harry Rushakoff
Harry Rushakoff (born November 16, 1958) is a former drummer for the band Concrete Blonde. He started his career in Chicago, playing with The Nodes and then with Special Affect (which featured Ministry's Al Jourgensen and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult's Groovie Mann. Rushakoff also played in Chicago area band 4xy with bassist Chris Kirkendal, guitarist Eddie Yeo, and singer Aidan Mann. He worked with Jim Belushi when the actor used 4xy to record some demos and play live dates. Rushakoff also played with famed Chicago guitarist Harvey Mandel (known for his work with the Rolling Stones and Canned Heat). In addition, he recorded with longtime friend Tom Peterson, Cheap Trick’s bassist. Early Trax
''Early Trax'' is a compilation album by an American rock band Ministry, released on October 12, 2004, by Rykodisc. The album contains either released or previously unreleased songs from 1981 through to 1984, as well as some remixes of those songs (roughly half of the album by time is made up of remixes of songs also on the album). The album is thus similar to the 1987 compilation album '' Twelve Inch Singles'' and contains much of the same material. Most of the songs on the album were initially released on the Wax Trax! label. As can be expected from Ministry's early work, the album features a strong synthpop and new wave flavor - Ministry moved more definitively into the industrial metal genre later into their career (post ''Twitch''). The album also shows Ministry's early gothic rock beginnings, with the two mixes of "I'm Falling" and "Overkill" being some of their earliest tracks. DNA Lounge
DNA Lounge is an all-ages nightclub and restaurant/cafe in the SoMa district of San Francisco owned by Jamie Zawinski, a former Netscape programmer and open-source software hacker. The club features DJ dancing, live music, burlesque performances, and occasionally conferences, private parties, and film premieres. DNA Lounge has seven full bars, two stages, four dance floors, and a full service pizza restaurant and cafe. Since 2001 the club has been providing continuous audio and video webcasts of all events free of charge. Rykodisc
Rykodisc is an American record label owned by Warner Music Group, operating as a unit of WMG's Independent Label Group and is distributed through Alternative Distribution Alliance. History Claiming to be the first CD-only independent record label in the United States, Rykodisc was founded in 1983 in Salem, Massachusetts, by Arthur Mann, Rob Simonds, Doug Lexa and Don Rose. The name "Ryko," which the label claimed was a Japanese word meaning "sound from a flash of light," was chosen to reflect the company's CD-only policy. In the late 1980s, however, the label also began to issue high-quality cassette / vinyl and MiniDisc versions of many releases under the name Ryko Analogue. Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. It had co-existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. ''With Sympathy'' is the debut studio album by American industrial band Ministry, released on May 10, 1983 by Arista Records. The group was formed in 1981 by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Al Jourgensen, with drummer Stephen George being the most notable member of its initial lineup. The album was briefly re-released overseas as ''Work for Love''. Background and recording In late 1981, Jourgensen was living in Chicago and involved in its underground scene. He began to write and record songs in his apartment, using a newly bought ARP Omni synthesizer, a drum machine and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. At one point, a demo tape featuring the song "I'm Falling" gained the attention of Wax Trax! Records label co-founder and co-owner Jim Nash. New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. Alain David Jourgensen (born Alejandro Ramírez Casas; October 9, 1958) is a Cuban-American singer, musician and music producer. Closely related with the independent record label Wax Trax! Records, his musical career spans four decades. He is best known as the frontman and lyricist of the industrial metal band Ministry, which he founded in 1981 and of which he remains the only constant member. He was the primary musician of several Ministry-related projects, such as Revolting Cocks, Lard, and Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters.
