The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is the presiding officer of the territorial legislature in Nunavut, Canada. Since 1999 the position has been elected by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) using a secret ballot. The current speaker is Tony Akoak. Speaker (politics)
The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. Usage The title was first recorded in 1377 to describe the role of Thomas de Hungerford in the Parliament of England.Lee Vol 28, pp. 257,258. The speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, and the like. The speaker decides who may speak and has the powers to discipline members who break the procedures of the chamber or house. By convention, speakers are normally addressed in Parliament as 'Mister Speaker', if a man, or 'Madam Speaker', if a woman. Jobie Nutarak
Jobie Nutarak (May 10, 1947 – April 22, 2006) was a politician from Nunavut in northern Canada. Biography Nutarak was born in Pond Inlet on Baffin Island. He was elected to the district of Tunnuniq in 1999 and was re-elected in 2004. In 2004 he was elected to the position of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, being the first unilingual Inuktitut speaking person to hold the position. Prior to territorial politics, Nutarak was involved in local and regional education and active with Inuit land claims organizations. Paul Okalik
Paul Okalik ( iu, ᐹᓪ ᐅᑲᓕᖅ, ; born May 26, 1964) is a Canadian politician. He is the first Inuk to have been called to the Nunavut Bar. He was also the first premier of Nunavut. On November 4, 2010, he was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. James Arreak
James Arreak (born October 6, 1952) is a territorial and municipal level politician in Canada. He has served as a member of both the Nunavut and Northwest Territories legislatures. Biography Arreak is from Clyde River, Nunavut, Canada. Arreak was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election. He won the Baffin South electoral district defeating incumbent Ipeelee Kilabuk. He left the legislature less than a year later in 1980. He was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Uqqummiut having won the seat in the 2004 Nunavut election.
