Sparkleshark
''Sparkleshark'' is a stage play by Philip Ridley that was originally commissioned for the BT National Connections, the UK National Theatre's youth theatre scheme in 1997. ''Sparkleshark'' had a professional run at the Royal National Theatre in 1999 followed by a tour in 2001. The play is part of Ridley's sequence of plays for young people ''The Storyteller Sequence'' which share thematic similarities, the most distinct being the redemptive power of storytelling. Synopsis High up on a tower block roof, Jake writes magical and fantastic stories in secret book to hide from bullies. The Storyteller Sequence
''The Storyteller Sequence'' is a series of one act dramas written for young people by Philip Ridley. The plays, all set in east London, use fairytale stories and theatrical conventions to reveal the traumas of their young protagonists. To date there are five plays in the sequence, although Ridley has intimated there will eventually be seven. The five written to date are ''Karamazoo'', ''Fairytaleheart'', ''Moonfleece'', ''Sparkleshark'' and ''Brokenville''; note that although this is not the order in which the plays were written and performed chronologically, it is the order Ridley intends the finished "sequence" to run. A collection bringing together the five plays produced so far in the sequence was published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama in late 2015. Philip Ridley
Philip Ridley (born 1957 in East London) is an English storyteller working in a wide range of artistic media. As a visual artist he has been cited as a contemporary of the 'Young British Artists', and had his artwork exhibited internationally. As a novelist he has created fiction for both children and adults and has had particular success and recognition as a children's author. In the field of cinema he is perhaps best known for his award-winning screenplay for the 1990 film, ''The Krays (film), The Krays'' (1990), a biopic about the Kray twins which was directed by Peter Medak. As a filmmaker in his own right he is recognised for creating a loose trilogy of horror films: ''The Reflecting Skin'' (1990), ''The Passion of Darkly Noon'' (1995) and ''Heartless (2009 film), Heartless'' (2009) for which he has acquired a cult following. National Theatre Connections
Connections (also referred to as New Connections and formerly Shell Connections and BT Connections) is the Royal National Theatre in London's annual youth theatre festival. It was founded in 1995 and sponsored by Royal Dutch Shell until 2007 when the Bank of America took over the sponsorship. The plays are also published by the National Theatre each year. Scheme The National Theatre annually commissions ten plays from established playwrights which are performed by youth theatre groups across the UK. Groups are invited to perform at Connections Festivals held at a professional theatre in their area. A random performance group from each play is then performed at the end of the Festival at the National Theatre. Terry Johnson (dramatist)
Terry Johnson (born 20 December 1955) is a British dramatist and director working for stage, television and film. Graduating from the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Birmingham, he worked as an actor from 1971 to 1975, and has been active as a playwright since the early 1980s. Johnson's stage work has been produced around the world. Lee Oakes
Lee Oakes (born 1976) is an English actor best known for his role as Munch Wilkinson in the British comedy ''Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps'' and as Kev in the British television series '' After You've Gone,'' a friend and fellow builder of Jimmy Venables. Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) is a not-for-profit national youth theatre company located in Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia. It was founded in 1964 by Eleanor Witcombe.
