''Spacegirl and Other Favorites'' is the second album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, recorded in 1993 but not released until 1995. Background "Hide and Seek" was released as a single in 1994. The song "Swallowtail" was also written during these sessions, although a studio recording was not released commercially until 2001. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical project and band led and started by Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film called '' Dig!'', and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behavior of Newcombe. The collective has released 18 albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, 13 EPs, 18 singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The bandname is a ''portmanteau'' of deceased Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the 1978 Jonestown Massacre. Releases 1993–1996: Early years The collective was founded by Anton Newcombe in San Francisco between 1990 and 1993. ''Methodrone'' is the debut studio album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, released in 1995 by record label Bomp! Records, Bomp!. Content The title of the album is a portmanteau of the drug methadone, used in treatment of heroin addiction, and the word "drone". The album's dreamy shoegaze rock sound is comparable to that of Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine (band), My Bloody Valentine. ''Methodrone'' is the only album to feature vocalists Elise Dye and Paola Simmonds. Drummers Brian Glaze and Graham Bonnar were also brought into the line-up to replace Ricky Maymi who had begun playing bass in the band. It was also Graham Bonnar's only appearance in the band. ''Take It from the Man!'' is the third studio album by American psychedelic rock band the Brian Jonestown Massacre. After recording their shoegaze-influenced debut album ''Methodrone'' (1995) and releasing a collection of early recordings, ''Spacegirl & Other Favorites'', the band took influence from 1960s British psychedelic garage rock and recorded ''Take it from the Man!'' from November 1995–February 1996. After recording the entire album with an unnamed producer who scrapped the recordings, the band re-recorded the album on a minimal budget, mostly at Lifesource Studios in Emeryville, California with production from Psychic TV's Larry Thrasher, whose usual "studio" approach was vetoed out by the band's back-to-basics approach. The album's psychedelic garage rock has often been compared to the Rolling Stones. Released by Bomp! Anton Alfred Newcombe (born August 29, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and founder of the music group The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Newcombe was the subject of the 2004 documentary film '' Dig!'', along with Portland, Oregon alternative rock band The Dandy Warhols. Music Newcombe started in the 1980s recording with a band called Homeland. Besides his own group, Newcombe has worked with a number of bands, most notably The Dandy Warhols, The High Dials, The Manvils, Innaway, and The Quarter After. Jeffrey Davies (born 1967 in Washington, D.C.) is an American rock musician best known as the original lead guitarist of the psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. In documentary Dig by Ondi Timowner, Davies cowrote the theme song with Anton Newcombe for the HBO series 'Boardwalk Empire': "Straight Up and Down" from 1996 album "Take it From the Man" -Played in the band from 1992 to 1999. He rejoined the band in 2001 only to quit again in 2003. Spending much of his early years in Washington D.C., Davies' family moved to New Mexico where he spent his teen years before eventually moving to San Francisco. Matt Hollywood (born June 11, 1973) is an American indie rock guitarist and singer. He was a founding member and leader of the Portland-based indie rock band The Out Crowd, as well as a founding member of the psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Ricky Rene Maymi (; is an American rock musician, best known as an original member of the psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The Brian Jonestown Massacre A founding member and original drummer of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, he then switched to guitar and finally on to bass guitar before leaving the band in 1993. He rejoined as 12-string guitarist in 2003.
