Spa Road, Bermondsey
Spa Road is a street in Bermondsey in the London Borough of Southwark. It takes it name from the historic Bermondsey Spa, developed by the painter Thomas Keyse after mineral springs were discovered there in the eighteenth century. Bermondsey Spa Gardens is located at its western end at the site of the former Spa. It contains the former Bermondsey Town Hall, built in 1930, that was the headquarters of the old Bermondsey Borough. This replaced an older building dating back to the 1880s. Nearby is the former Bermondsey Public Library, a red brick building dating from the 1890s. Spa Road railway station was located at the eastern end of the street and was the original terminus of the capital's first railway the London and Greenwich Railway when it opened in 1836. Bermondsey Spa Gardens
Bermondsey Spa Gardens is a park in Bermondsey, London. It is located on Grange Road, SE1 3AH. The park has been included in the recent and ongoing regeneration of the Bermondsey Spa area. The park, with improvements designed by the architects Broadway Malyan, is intended to act as a focal point for the surrounding area. Origins The park is on the site of the 18th century Bermondsey Spa, opened by Thomas Keyse in the 1760s: an adjacent street is Keyse Road. After Keyse's gardens closed, they were built over. The area was bombed heavily in WW2. The park was opened, by the Mayor of Bermondsey, in 1954. Facilities The park was closed for redevelopment in 2005 and then re-opened in March 2006. London Bridge – Greenwich Railway Viaduct
The London Bridge – Greenwich Railway Viaduct consists of a series of nineteen brick railway viaducts linked by road bridges between London Bridge railway station and Deptford Creek, which together make a single structure in length. The structure carries the former London and Greenwich Railway line and consists of 851 semi-circular arches and 27 skew arches or road bridges. It is the longest run of arches in Britain, It is also one of the oldest railway viaducts in the world, and the earliest example of an entirely elevated railway line. London And Greenwich Railway
The London and Greenwich Railway (L&GR) was opened in London between 1836 and 1838. It was the first steam railway in the capital, the first to be built specifically for passengers, and the first entirely elevated railway. Origins The idea for the line came from Colonel George Thomas Landmann, until 1824 a Royal Engineer, and George Walter, and the company was floated at a meeting on 25 November 1831. It would run from close to London Bridge, convenient for journeys to the City. It would be some long, on a viaduct of 878 brick arches, some of them skew (see London Bridge-Greenwich Railway Viaduct), to avoid level crossings over the many streets which were already appearing in the south of London. Spa Road Railway Station
Spa Road railway station in Bermondsey, south-east London, was the original terminus of the capital's first railway, the London and Greenwich Railway (L&GR). It was also the first railway terminus in what is now Greater London. First opened in 1836, the station went through several changes of ownership, was rebuilt several times, changed its name and was relocated a couple of hundred yards away from its original site before it closed in 1915 due to cost-saving measures during the First World War. The Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey was a Metropolitan borough in the County of London, created in 1900 by the London Government Act 1899. It was abolished and its area became part of the London Borough of Southwark in 1965. Formation and boundaries The borough was formed from four civil parishes: St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, St Mary Rotherhithe, Southwark St John Horsleydown and Southwark St Olave and St Thomas. Bermondsey Town Hall
Bermondsey Town Hall is a municipal building in Spa Road, Bermondsey, London. It is a Grade II listed building. History The current building was commissioned as an extension to a 19th-century vestry hall which had been designed by George Elkington in the Italianate style for the Parish of St Mary Magdalen. The vestry hall had become the headquarters of the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey in 1900 but was badly damaged in the Blitz during the Second World War and was subsequently demolished. A memorial to soldiers who had served in the Second Boer War was removed from the building before it was demolished and, after being in storage for some 40 years, installed in St James's Church, Bermondsey. Thomas Keyse (1722–1800) was an English still-life painter, and the proprietor of Bermondsey Spa. Life A self-taught artist, Keyse was a member of the Free Society of Artists, and exhibited with them from 1761 to 1764; he painted still life, flowers or fruit. From 1765 to 1768 he was an occasional exhibitor at the Society of Artists, and twice sent pictures to the Royal Academy. In 1768 he obtained a premium from the Society of Arts for a new method of setting crayon drawings. About 1770 Keyse opened a tea-garden in Bermondsey, then a suburb of London, where a chalybeate spring had been found, and which became known as the Bermondsey Spa.
