Sowerby, North Yorkshire
Sowerby () is a village, electoral ward and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England immediately south of the neighbouring market town of Thirsk. Although the boundary between the two parishes runs very close to Thirsk town centre, the village retains its own identity and has a separate Parish Council. The author James Herriot lived in the village. History The lines of a Roman road can still be seen in the fields to the north and east of the village along the Green Lane and was known as the Saxty Way. The village is mentioned twice in the ''Domesday Book'' as ''Sorebi'' in the Yarlestre hundred. The land was split across both the head manors of Easingwold and Newsham. At the time of the Norman invasion, the manors were split between Earl Morcar and Ligulf, who granted land to Orm. Afterwards, the lands became Crown property. Huron Shores is a Municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario, located along the North Channel of Lake Huron in the Algoma District. The municipality was created in 1999 through the amalgamation of the former townships of Thessalon, Thompson, and Day and Bright Additional, and the former village of Iron Bridge. The town of Thessalon, although surrounded by Huron Shores, is ''not'' part of the Municipality. The township's current mayor is Gil Reeves, who succeeded Ted Linley in the 2010 municipal election. Communities The main communities in the township are Iron Bridge, Sowerby and Little Rapids. Sowerby ( ) is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, in West Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Pennines, contiguous with Sowerby Bridge, west-southwest of Halifax. History Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sowerby appears in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086, and was an important settlement long before Halifax began to dominate. The ancient district of Sowerbyshire, a stretch of forest centred on the town leading down the Ryburn and Calder valleys and almost up to Halifax, was a Royal chase. The name Sowerby, is made up from the Norse ''Sor'' for sour and suffixed with ''by'' representing a parished area. The local pronunciation follows the original Norse. (''saw+bi''). A local legend described a castle in Sowerby and its presence was confirmed by excavations on 'Castle Hill' at the high end of the old town. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Inskip-with-Sowerby is a civil parish in the Borough of Wyre, in Lancashire, England. A part of the Fylde, the parish includes the village of Inskip and the hamlets Crossmoor to the west and Sowerby to the east. Also Inskip Moss Side lies about a mile north-west of the village at . In 2011 it had a population of 840. The parish adjoins the Wyre parishes of Great Eccleston, Upper Rawcliffe-with-Tarnacre and Myerscough and Bilsborrow, along with Woodplumpton in the City of Preston and also Treales, Roseacre and Wharles and Elswick in the Borough of Fylde. Toponymy The first part of the name Inskip may be the Brittonic ''ïnïs'' meaning "island" (Welsh ), in place names generally referring to dry land in a marshy flood-prone area. Temple Sowerby is a village and civil parish in Cumbria, northern England. It is close to the main east–west A66 road about east of Penrith, Cumbria, Penrith in the River Eden, Cumbria, Eden Valley. At the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census Temple Sowerby was grouped with Newbiggin, Kirkby Thore, Newbiggin giving a total population of 528. Sowerby Bridge
Sowerby Bridge ( ) is a market town in the Upper Calder Valley in Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The Calderdale Council ward population at the 2011 census was 11,703. History The town was originally a fording point over the once much-wider River Calder where it is joined by the River Ryburn. The town takes its name from the historic bridge which spans the river in the town centre. Before the Industrial Revolution the area was divided between the parishes of Sowerby, Norland, Skircoat and Warley. The boundaries between them being the rivers Calder and Ryburn and Warley Clough, which is now largely culverted. Textiles and engineering industry grew up around the bridge. Sowerby Bridge Town Hall, which accommodated the offices of the local board, was completed in 1857. By the mid-19th century the population had grown and the settlement became an urban district in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1894.
