Southwest District School (Bloomfield, Connecticut)
The Southwest District School is a historic school building at 430 Simsbury Road in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Built in 1858, it is one of the town's few surviving 19th-century district school buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Description and history The Southwest District School is located in a rural-residential area of southwestern Bloomfield, on the east side of Simsbury Road (Connecticut Route 185) a short way south of its junction with High Hill Road. It is set close to the road on a very small parcel of land. It is a single-story stone structure, with a gabled roof. The stone appears to be locally quarried rock, cut in random sizes and shapes, with square-cut corner blocks. Windows are set in rectangular openings, with sandstone sills and lintels. Bloomfield is a suburb of Hartford in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The town's population was 21,535 at the 2020 census. Bloomfield is best known as the headquarters of healthcare services company Cigna. History Originally land of the Poquonock Native Americans, the area was first settled in 1660 as part of Windsor, organized as the Parish of Wintonbury in 1736. Wintonbury comes from three names from neighboring towns Windsor, Farmington, and Simsbury. It was finally incorporated as the town of Bloomfield by the Connecticut General Assembly on May 28, 1835. Initially, the town's local economy was agriculturally based, mostly in shade tobacco, remaining as such until it developed as a postwar suburb of Hartford starting in the 1950s. Connecticut Route 185
Route 185 is a Connecticut state highway in the western Hartford suburbs, running from Simsbury to West Hartford. Route description Route 185 begins as Hartford Road at an intersection with US 202 and Route 10 in the Weatogue section of Simsbury. The road heads east across the Farmington River and turns southeast, passing by Talcott Mountain State Park then heading into the town of Bloomfield, where it becomes Simsbury Road. In Bloomfield, it passes the western end of Route 178 and continues generally southeast across the southwestern part of town into West Hartford.
