Southwell railway station was a railway station that served the minster (church), minster town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England from 1847 to 1959. History The station at Southwell opened on 1 July 1847 as a branch line from the Nottingham and Lincoln Railway at Rolleston railway station, Rolleston Junction. In its early years, the passenger service was horse-worked. In 1862 gas lighting was introduced. In 1871 the line was extended to Mansfield by the contractors Eckersley and Baylis (using cast iron bridges built by Andrew Handyside and Company of Derby). The Midland Railway took the opportunity to rebuild the station building and stationmaster's house in stone and the platform shelters, and dismantle the original wooden station building, which was re-erected at Beeston railway station. Southwell, Nottinghamshire
Southwell (, ) is a minster and market town in the district of Newark and Sherwood in Nottinghamshire, England. It is home to the grade-I listed Southwell Minster, the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The population of the town was recorded at 7,558 in the 2021 Census. The town is on the River Greet and is located geographically west of Newark on Trent, north-east of Nottingham, south-east of Mansfield and south-east of Worksop. Toponymy The origin of the name is unclear. Southwell Racecourse
Southwell Racecourse (pronounced /ˈsʌðəl/ or /ˈsaʊθwɛl/) is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located east of Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England. It is one of only six racecourses in the UK to have an all-weather track and is one of two courses in the UK with a Tapeta surface. Southwell previously used a track surface of Fibresand, a mixture of sand and wispy fibres before changing to Tapeta (a mixture of sand, wax and fibre) in 2021. National Hunt racing on a turf course also takes place at Southwell. Fiskerton railway station, is on the Nottingham to Lincoln Line, situated south-east of the small town of Southwell and serves the village of Fiskerton in Nottinghamshire, England. History The station opened on 4 August 1846 by the Midland Railway. It was taken over by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, and by British Rail in 1948. A signal box was installed at the station in 1902. This Midland Railway Type 3a box was downgraded to a gate box from 2 December 1934. A new junction was laid between Fiskerton and the Rolleston Junction to Southwell line in 1929 to allow mineral trains from Mansfield and district to access Nottingham without reversing at Rolleston Junction.
