Kew is a suburb and Kew (Sefton ward), ward of Southport, a seaside town in Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Sefton, Merseyside, England. It makes up the southeastern edge of the town, bordering Scarisbrick in West Lancashire. It is a middle class area of mostly modern development, and one of Southport's smallest suburbs. History The area was originally a 12-acre garden and zoological site in the 1880s, named after Kew Gardens in Surrey. Visitors to Southport would travel via horse tram to enjoy the gardens, pavilion and lake which had gondoliers. Parts of the lake and gardens still survive. Southport General Infirmary was a Victorian hospital that was Southport's first major hospital. The first construction of the building started in October 1892, with the first patients being seen at the hospital in September 1895. History The first infirmary Southport Infirmary was the first hospital in Southport, it was constructed on Virginia Street in 1870 and opened in 1871 to accommodate six male patients and six female patients. It also had two sidewards by where patients with infectious diseases were isolated. The hospital proved so popular that a new site was sought for the construction of a new and bigger hospital. Southport Promenade Hospital
Southport Promenade Hospital is a Grade II listed former Victorian hospital that was situated on the Promenade at the seaside resort of Southport. The building has been restored into luxury apartments known as the Marine Gate Mansions. History The hospital was commissioned by the Southport Strangers Charity who established it using voluntary donations in Lord Street in 1806. It became the Southport Dispensary in 1823. After the existing premises became too small, it moved to a new purpose-built building designed by Thomas Withnell in the Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival style in Seabank Road in 1853.
