Southland Mall is a regional shopping mall in the Whitehaven neighborhood of South Memphis, Tennessee. It was built in 1966, becoming the first enclosed mall in the Mid-South. It is managed and owned by Namdar Realty Group. There are over 60 stores. There are two vacant anchors last occupied by Macy's Macy's (originally R. H. Joseph Meyerhoff
Joseph Meyerhoff (April 8, 1899 – February 2, 1985) was an American businessman, fundraiser, and philanthropist based in Baltimore, Maryland. His son is Harvey Meyerhoff. Biography Meyerhoff was born in Poltava in what is now Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, and was brought to the United States as a young boy in 1906. He grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore City College (which, despite its name, is a public high school); he then attended and completed his law degree at the University of Maryland in the mid-1930s. Meyerhoff practiced law for some years upon graduation from the UM School of Law until he opened a construction company with his brother called Monumental Properties Inc. This firm thrived for nearly 40 years until it was sold for about $180M (making Meyerhoff and his family one of the wealthiest in Baltimore). Namdar Realty Group is an American shopping mall investment company based in Great Neck, New York. They primarily purchase shopping malls with partner Mason Asset Management. Namdar and Mason are both family owned, and as of 2021, own over 400 properties including 100 plus malls. Strategy Namdar and Mason primarily purchase malls for low prices, with various problems, but do not invest in improving them. The deals for these malls are done in cash. Most malls they purchase are in markets considered B and C grade. Because of this low price/maintenance, they have a high return on investment. Namdar's primary source of investment capital comes from bonds on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Namdar and Mason often charge lower rent to keep mall vacancies low. Whitehaven, Memphis
Whitehaven, informally known as "Blackhaven", is a predominantly African-American community in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It was first organized in the late 19th century as a neighborhood for upper-class families. Its current population is about 50,000. History The community takes its name from a Colonel Francis White, who was an early settler and major property owner. White was influential in getting a rail line to run through what was first called White's Station, later Whitehaven. South Memphis, one of the oldest portions of Memphis, Tennessee, is a community stretching from Midtown and Downtown to the Mississippi state line.
