The Louisiana Scenic Byways are a network of roadways within the U.S. state of Louisiana that have been deemed of cultural, historical, or scenic value. The routes follow various segments of the state-maintained highway system, usually rural in character, and are mostly located in the central and southern areas of the state. Louisiana Highway 22 (LA 22) is a state highway located in southeastern Louisiana. It runs in a general east–west direction from the junction of LA 75 and LA 942 in Darrow to U.S. Highway 190 (US 190) in Mandeville. The route traverses a variety of terrain and surroundings over the course of its journey, which begins at the Mississippi River in rural Ascension Parish. It also crosses several navigable waterways with movable bridges spanning two of them: the Amite River and Tchefuncte River. After crossing both Interstate 10 (I-10) and US 61 in Sorrento, LA 22 winds through a cypress swamp in Livingston Parish west of Lake Maurepas. Sorrento is a town in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,227 at the 2000 census. By the 2010 census it had grown 14.2%, to 1,401 inhabitants. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Sorrento is located at (30.180229, -90.866138). Ponchatoula is the second-largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. The population was 6,559 at the 2010 census and 7,545 at the time of the 2020 population estimates program. Etymology It is speculated that the name is derived from the Choctaw words ''Pashi'' meaning "hair" and perhaps ''itula'' or ''itola'' meaning "to fall" or "to hang" or "flowing" in the Choctaw language History William Akers Ponchatoula was originally established as a small fishing village around 1820. Then in the year 1839 a man named William Akers moved into town and purchased over 1000 acres from the United States Federal Government. William began farming and harvesting the local virgin pine timber and pulling the logs to a nearby sawmill with teams of oxen. Interstate 55 (I-55) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that spans from LaPlace, Louisiana, to Chicago, Illinois. Within the state of Louisiana, the highway travels from the national southern terminus at I-10 in LaPlace to the Mississippi state line north of Kentwood. LaPlace ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, United States, situated along the east bank of the Mississippi River, in the New Orleans metropolitan area.
