Southern Ethiopia Peoples' Democratic Coalition
The Southern Ethiopia People's Democratic Coalition is an opposition political coalition in Ethiopia based in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region. At the last legislative elections held on 15 May 2005, the Coalition was part of the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces that won 52 out of 527 seats in the Council of People's Representatives (CPR). It was founded in March 1992, when a number of political parties formed a coalition, which included the Gurage People's Democratic Front, the Omotic People's Democratic Front, the Kaffa People's Democratic Union, the Hadiya National Democratic Organization, the Yem National Democratic Movement, the Wolaita People's Democratic Front, the Sidama Liberation Movement, the Gedeo People's Democratic Organization, and Burji People's Democratic Organization. Southern Nations, Nationalities, And People's Region
The Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (often abbreviated as SNNPR; am, የደቡብ ብሔር ብሔረሰቦችና ሕዝቦች ክልል, Yädäbub Bḥer Bḥeräsäbočna Hzboč Kllə) is a regional state in southwestern Ethiopia. It was formed from the merger of five ''kililoch'', called Regions 7 to 11, following the regional council elections on 21 June 1992. Its government is based in Hawassa. Ethiopian General Elections, 2005
General elections were held in Ethiopia on 15 May 2005, for seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives and four regional government councils. Under pressure from the international community, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi promised that this election would be proof that more democracy would come in this multi-ethnic nation; international elections observers from the European Union (EU) and the U.S.-based Carter Center were present to observe the results. This election succeeded in attracting about 90% of the registered voters to the polls. A government ban on protests was imposed throughout the election period. United Ethiopian Democratic Forces
The United Ethiopian Democratic Forces ( am, የኢትዮጵያ ዴሞክራሲዊ ኃይሎቸ ሕብረት) was a coalition of several political parties in Ethiopia which combined to compete for seats in the Ethiopian general elections held on May 15, 2005. The House of Peoples' Representatives is the lower house of the Ethiopian Federal Parliamentary Assembly. Located in the capital Addis Ababa, the House has 547 members. All are elected in theory for five-year term in single-seat constituencies. The proceedings in the chamber are led by Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives. Of the 547 seats, 122 are vacant.
