Southern Area League Riders' Championship
The Southern Area League Riders' Championship was a contest between the top riders with the highest average points total from motorcycle speedway clubs competing in the Southern Area League in the United Kingdom. It was held in each year that the league existed - between 1954 and 1959 and also during 1960, when several teams without league racing raced a series of challenge matches. The event was superseded by the Provincial League Riders' Championship because the Provincial League replaced the Southern Area League in 1960. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Leo McAuliffe
Leo McAuliffe (1933-2018) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from Wales. Biography McAuliffe was born in 1933 in the village of Clydach, Swansea, Clydach near Swansea. In 1948, he moved to Pontardawe and appeared in court following a motorcycle offence where the magistrate suggested that he find an appropriate place for his motorcycling. After moving to London he began training at Rye House and gained his first contract with Eastbourne Eagles McAuliffe won the Southern Area League Riders' Championship, held at Rye House Stadium on 30 September 1956. Later, he became a protege of fellow Welshman Freddie Williams (speedway rider), Freddie Williams and went on to ride in the List of United Kingdom speedway league champions, top tier of British Speedway for various clubs. Ross Gilbertson
Vernon Walter Ross Gilbertson (2 February 1931 – 8 February 2009) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Career Gilbertson started racing in the British leagues during the 1954 Southern Area League, when riding for the California Poppies and helped them win the league title. He rode for California during both the 1955 and 1956 seasons, improving his average significantly to 9.00 in 1956. In 1957, California switched their promotion to Aldershot Shots and Gilbertson recorded an even better average of 9.30. This led to him to being signed by Southampton Saints in the top league for the 1958 Speedway National League. He also doubled up for Eastbourne Eagles in the Southern Area League, where he helped the south coast club win the league title in 1959. 1960 Southern Area Riders' Championship
The 1960 Southern Area Riders' Championship was the final edition of the Southern Area League Riders' Championship, which was a motorcycle speedway competition. History From 1954 until 1959 the Southern Area League held a competition for its leading riders called the Southern Area League Riders' Championship. It was the second tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. However, in 1960, British speedway underwent a major revamp with the introduction of the 1960 Provincial Speedway League, which would act as the new second tier of speedway in Britain. The five teams that previously formed the Southern League were forced to decide what direction they would take. Ipswich Witches joined the National League (the top division) and Yarmouth Bloaters joined the Provincial League. Yarmouth Bloaters
The Yarmouth Bloaters were a motorcycle speedway team who operated from Yarmouth Stadium, Great Yarmouth from 1948 to 1962. History Speedway meetings had been taking place at Yarmouth Stadium since 1932. In 1948 the Yarmouth Bloaters speedway team were created and they joined the National League Division Three. The original plan was to use the name Yarmouth Mariners but the name was disliked by supporters and the name Bloaters was chosen because of the town's connections with the fishing industry. It was also the nickname of the local football team, Great Yarmouth Town F.C. The team's race jacket consisted of red and black quarters which then became red with black cross adorned with an image of a silver bloater. The team finished in 11th place in their inaugural league season. Dave Hankins
David Herbert Hankins (26 May 1937 – July 2011) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Hankins started racing in the British leagues during the 1954 Southern Area League season, when riding for the Brafield Flying Foxes. He remained with the club the following season, improving his average to 5.91. In 1956, Brafield were replaced in the Southern Area League by Southern Rovers and Hankins rode a couple of times for the club in the 1956 Southern Area League. His career was revived the following season when he joined the Norwich Stars in the top division and he rode alongside the likes of 1956 world champion Ove Fundin. For the 1958 season he joined Ipswich Witches but it is not known if he actually started for them. In 1959, he rode for Leicester Hunters in the top division and doubled up in the Southern Area League, riding for Yarmouth Bloaters and later Ipswich Witches. Arlington Stadium is a sports stadium on Arlington Road West, Hailsham, East Sussex. The stadium is mainly used for Stock car racing and was formerly used for motorcycle speedway as the home track for the Eastbourne Eagles. Southern Rovers
Southern Rovers were a British motorcycle speedway team between 1956 and 1959. They were the champions of the Southern Area League during 1957. The team were unique to speedway at the time because they completed a league season despite having no home stadium to ride from. History The team were created in 1956 following the demise of Brafield Flying Foxes. The Southern Area League was faced with a serious problem in that only three teams would have lined up for the season, therefore the promoters got together and encouraged the formation of a team that would race at the three venues of the other league teams. Home fixtures for Southern Rovers would not be held at the team's stadium that they were riding against but away fixtures would. Rovers' team manager Les King also lost the services of their rider Vic Hall (formerly of Brafield) to injury. 1957 Southern Area League
The 1957 Southern Area League was the fourth season of the Southern Area League but the first as the regional second tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. Summary California Poppies were no longer competitors with the promotion and nickname moving to Aldershot. The Southern Rovers team who had been without a track in the previous season had found a new home at Rayleigh and were also referred to as Rayleigh II. Southern Rovers were the champions. Final table Leading Averages Riders' Championship Leo McAuliffe won the Riders' Championship for the second successive season. The final was held at Arlington Stadium on 29 September. Remarkably McAuliffe and Maury Conway dead heated in the run off to decide the champion after both riders finished on 13 points. A second run off was required in which McAuliffe won by a wheel. Eastbourne Eagles
The Eastbourne Eagles were a British speedway team, based at Arlington Stadium, near Eastbourne, England, that raced in the SGB Championship. History Speedway was initially introduced to Eastbourne in 1929. During their first league season they were the 1947 Speedway National League Division Three champions. Despite winning the title at their first attempt they were forced to close down due to a petrol ban enforced at their Arlington Stadium. They decided to transfer their team to Hastings Saxons and at the beginning of 1948 the Speedway Control Board granted a licence to Hastings to stage speedway. Eastbourne would not compete again in the league until they joined the Southern Area League in 1954.
