Southampton Academy is a small, private school located in Courtland, Virginia. Southampton Academy, also known locally as "SA" provides education for students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade. Southampton Academy was founded in 1969, as a segregation academy. Athletics The school contains students ranging from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, thus the team offers athletic teams from the middle school level (junior junior varsity) to the varsity level. Most of Southampton Academy's athletic teams participate in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference (VCC). At the state level, Southampton Academy participates in Virginia Independent Schools (VIS) in Division III (smallest schools classification). Courtland, Virginia
Courtland is an incorporated town in Southampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,295 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Southampton County. History Originally named "Jerusalem" by the first colonists to settle in the region, the town was given its present name in 1888. It served as Southampton County's only town through the 18th century. The town was formed in 1791 on the north shore of the Nottoway River, on a parcel of ten acres (40,000 m2) beside the courthouse, and has been the county seat since then. In 1831, the town became well known as the site of the trials and subsequent executions of Nat Turner and some of his cohort who had planned a major slave rebellion. According to a letter written by Solon Borland to the governor of North Carolina, the village was a small hamlet of approximately 175 people, with only three stores, one saddler, one carriage maker, two hotels, two attorneys and two physicians. Segregation academies are private schools in the Southern United States that were founded in the mid-20th century by white parents to avoid having their children attend desegregated public schools. They were founded between 1954, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated public schools were unconstitutional, and 1976, when the court ruled similarly about private schools. While many of these schools still existmost with low percentages of minority students even todaythey may not legally discriminate against students or prospective students based on any considerations of religion, race or ethnicity that serve to exclude non-white students. Eight-man football is a form of gridiron football, generally played by high schools with smaller enrollments.
