South Wood

	South Wood South Wood is a Local Nature Reserve in Hempstead, south of Gillingham in Kent. It is owned and managed by Medway Council. This wood was formerly used for timber, and it is now managed as a nature reserve. It has a population of dormice, which are rare in Britain and the rest of Europe. 	Hempstead, Kent Hempstead is a village near Gillingham, Kent in South East England. Historically a small hamlet, Hempstead grew throughout the 20th century to become part of the urban area of the Medway Towns. Hempstead is located on the southern edge of the Unitary authority of Medway, surrounded by Wigmore and the A278 trunk road (Hoath Way) to the east, Capstone valley to the west and the M2 motorway and the village of Bredhurst to the south. 	Medway Council Medway Council is the local authority of Medway in Kent, England. It is a unitary authority, having the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined. The council was created on 1 April 1998 and replaced Rochester-upon-Medway City Council and Gillingham Borough Council.
