South West London College
The South West London College was a higher education college located in the Tooting and Streatham areas of London, England. The college was founded in 1966, and closed in 1990; initially it was proposed that it would be merged with the Thames Polytechnic, but eventually it was dissolved under the 1988 Education Reform Act. Most of the college's staff and faculty moved to the South Bank Polytechnic. Elizabeth Alpha-Lavalie
Elizabeth Tygsona Alpha-Lavalie (5 January 1947 – 15 December 2013) was a Sierra Leonean politician. She was a member of the Sierra Leone People's Party and was one of the representatives in the Parliament of Sierra Leone for Bo District, serving as member of parliament from 1996 to 2012. Early life and career Alpha-Lavalie was born on 5 January 1947. Her father was Joseph Emman Henry Tucker, who served as a Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) Member of Parliament for Bo South, and served as deputy speaker of the parliament from 1961 to 1967. Her mother was Vivat Edith Letitia Tucker, who worked as a midwife and farmer. Alpha-Lavalie became active in politics at the age of 20, joining the SLPP and supporting her father. Ambassador Sarafadeen Tunji Isola (born 25 November 1960) was appointed as the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021. Chief (Dr.) Joseph Oladele Sanusi (born 24 September 1938) is a Nigerian chartered accountant who was Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from May 1999 to May 2004. Adam Kilgarriff
Adam Kilgarriff (12 February 1960 – 16 May 2015) was a corpus linguist, lexicographer, and co-author of Sketch Engine. Life His parents were booksellers. He spent one year as a volunteer in Kenya 1978–1979 then began studying at Cambridge University, graduating with a first class BA degree in philosophy and engineering in 1982. His first job was as a Housing Officer for the London and Quadrant Housing Trust. At the same time he studied at the South West London College. In 1987, he left his job and started an MSc in intelligent knowledge-based systems at the University of Sussex, from where he graduated the following year, continuing a DPhil in computational linguistics with thesis Polysemy (1992). In 2008 he made a return trip to Kenya with his old friend Raphael. He was also a participant in the Hastings Half Marathon for many years. Abdulkadir Ahmed (31 October 1940 – 1997) was a Nigerian businessman and civil servant who was governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 1982 to 1993. Background Ahmed was born on 31 October 1940 in Jama'are, Bauchi State. He attended Barewa College, Zaria in 1955. He joined the New Nigerian Development Company in January, 1960. Tooting
Tooting is a district in South London, forming part of the London Borough of Wandsworth and partly in the London Borough of Merton. It is located south south-west of Charing Cross. History Tooting has been settled since pre- Saxon times. The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin but the meaning is disputed. It could mean ''the people of Tota'', in which context Tota may have been a local Anglo-Saxon chieftain. Alternatively it could be derived from an old meaning of the verb ''to tout'', to look out. There may have been a watchtower here on the road to London and hence ''the people of the look-out post.'' South Bank Polytechnic
London South Bank University (LSBU) is a public university in Elephant and Castle, London. It is based in the London Borough of Southwark, near the South Bank of the River Thames, from which it takes its name. Founded in 1892 as the Borough Polytechnic Institute, it achieved university status in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. 1988 Education Reform Act
The Education Reform Act 1988 is widely regarded as the most important single piece of education legislation in England and Wales since the 'Butler' Education Act 1944. Provisions The main provisions of the Education Reform Act are as follows: * Academic tenure was abolished for academics appointed on or after 20 November 1987. * An element of choice was introduced, where parents could specify which school was their preferred choice. * City Technology Colleges (CTCs) were introduced.
