South West Community Development Council
The South West Community Development Council is one of five Community Development Councils (CDCs) set up across the Republic of Singapore to aid in local administration of governmental policies and schemes. They are funded in part by the government although they are free to engage in fund-raising activities. The South West Community Development Council (CDC) was formed on 24 November 2001. Spanning the south-western region of Singapore, covering a third of its land area. The District has about 220,000 households with over 750,000 residents. The District has a characteristically high concentration of industrial estates, including the Jurong Islands and Tuas area. Low Yen Ling
Low Yen Ling ( zh, s=刘燕玲, p=Liú Yànlíng; born 1974) is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Mayor of South West District since 2014, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth and Minister of State for Trade and Industry concurrently since 2020. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Bukit Gombak division of Chua Chu Kang GRC since 2011. Prior to entering politics, Low had worked at financial institutions, a start-up venture, and the Economic Development Board (EDB). She made her political debut in the 2011 general election as part of a five-member PAP team contesting in Chua Chu Kang GRC and won with 61.2% of the vote. Amy Khor Lean Suan ( zh, s=许连碹, p=Xǔ Liánxuàn; born 1958) is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Senior Minister of State for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment since 2020. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Hong Kah North SMC since 2011. Prior to entering politics, Khor was a valuer at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore, and executive director at Knight Frank. She made her political debut in the 2001 general election as part of a five-member PAP team contesting in Hong Kah GRC. Bukit Merah
Bukit Merah, also known as Redhill, is a planning area and new town situated in the southernmost part of the Central Region of Singapore. the planning area borders Tanglin to the north, Queenstown to the west and the Downtown Core, Outram and Singapore River planning areas of the Central Area to the east. Jurong East
Jurong East is a planning area and residential town situated in the West Region of Singapore. It borders Jurong West and Boon Lay to the west, Clementi to the east, Tengah and Bukit Batok to the north and Selat Jurong to the south. First developed in the 1970s, it is located approximately west of the Downtown Core district. Jurong East is the 7th most populated planning area in the West Region. Jurong East, along with the entire Jurong area in general, is envisioned to be the country's second central business district (CBD) as part of the Jurong Lake District project. Choa Chu Kang
Choa Chu Kang, alternatively spelt as Chua Chu Kang and often abbreviated as CCK, is a planning area and residential town located at the north-westernmost point of the West Region of Singapore. The town shares borders with Sungei Kadut to the north, Tengah to the southwest, Bukit Batok to the southeast, Bukit Panjang to the east and the Western Water Catchment to the west. Choa Chu Kang New Town is separated into two portions by the Kranji Expressway. Bukit Batok
Bukit Batok, often abbreviated as Bt Batok, is a planning area and matured residential town located along the eastern boundary of the West Region of Singapore. Bukit Batok statistically ranks in as the 25th largest, the 12th most populous and the 11th most densely populated planning area in the Republic. It is bordered by six other planning areas - Choa Chu Kang to the North, northeast and northwest, Cashew to the northeast and east, Clementi to the south, Bukit Timah to the southeast, Jurong East to the southwest and Tengah to the west. Bukit Batok largely sits on Gombak norite, a geological formation that is found in high concentrations within the planning area itself, as well as in the western parts of neighbouring Cashew. It was this presence of the igneous rock that made Bukit Batok a pivotal location for the quarrying industry in Singapore around the turn of the mid-20th century. Boon Lay
Boon Lay (, ta, பூன் லே) is a neighbourhood located in the town of Jurong West in the West Region of Singapore. Its borders very roughly correspond to the URA subzone of Boon Lay Place, situated within the Jurong West Planning Area. The subzone was named after Chew Boon Lay (), a prominent businessman in the late 19th century and early 20th century who owned the land where the precinct stands. When a requisition of of land from his estate was done by the war department of the then colonial government of Singapore, it led to the growth of Boon Lay Village in the 1940s, with a population of about 420 in the early 1960s. Boon Lay Place had earthworks begun in 1969 and had their HDB flats built since 1974. The subzone is a division of West Coast GRC, under the management of West Coast Town Council. Hong Kah GRC
Hong Kah Group Representation Constituency was a five-member Group Representation Constituency located in the western area of Singapore. The constituency covered the areas of Bukit Batok, Choa Chu Kang, Upper Bukit Timah, Jurong West and Lim Chu Kang. Hong Kah GRC was formed in 1988 and eventually dissolved and reformed into Chua Chu Kang GRC in 2011. It had always been held by the People's Action Party. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon
Yu-Foo Yee Shoon (; born 17 February 1950) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the country's governing People's Action Party (PAP), she served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1984 to 2011. Her political appointments included Mayor of South West District of Singapore and Minister of State at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. Political career Yu-Foo was first elected to Parliament in the 1984 general election. She was then one of only three female Members of Parliament at the time (and she went on to become one of the longest serving women politicians in Singapore).
