South Townsville is a coastal suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , South Townsville had a population of 2,353 people. Geography South Townsville is located on the northern end of Ross Island, bounded by the Coral Sea to the north, Ross Creek to the west and the Ross River to the east. The suburb of Railway Estate occupies the southern part of the island. Predominantly residential, it also is an important commercial and industrial hub of the city. The suburb is also a continuation to the Townsville CBD, serving as an accommodation and nightlife centre for the locals. The Palmer Street area of the suburb is known locally for its restaurants, hotels and its atmosphere. Ross River (Queensland)
The Ross River is a river located in northern Queensland, Australia. The long river flows through the city of Townsville and empties into the Coral Sea. It is the major waterway flowing through Townsville and the city's main source of drinking water. The river is named in 1864 after William Alfred Ross (-1887), first publican of the settlement who later became a mayor of Townsville in 1868. St John's Anglican Church Precinct is a heritage-listed churchyard at 30-34 Macrossan Street, South Townsville, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History St John's Anglican Precinct at South Townsville comprises a small timber church constructed in 1907; a timber rectory constructed ; and a small timber and fibrous-cement sheeted church hall. St John's Church is the third church erected on this site, replacing an 1898 church destroyed in 1903 by Cyclone Leonta, which in turn had replaced an 1884 church destroyed by Cyclone Sigma in 1896. The rectory also is the third residence on the site, replacing vicarages destroyed in the 1896 and 1903 cyclones. Victoria Park Hotel was a heritage-listed hotel at 266 Boundary Street, South Townsville, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Tunbridge & Tunbridge and built from 1895 to 1896 by Jeremiah Dempsey. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. It was completely destroyed by fire on 8 June 2018. History The Victoria Park Hotel was the second hotel built on this site and opened in 1896. It was designed by the Townsville architectural firm of Tunbridge and Tunbridge and was constructed by local builder Jeremiah Dempsey.
