It is included in the Sumter, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography South Sumter is located at (33.894445, -80.335583). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km2), all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 3,365 people, 1,196 households, and 851 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,266.0 people per square mile (488.4/km2). There were 1,395 housing units at an average density of 524.9/sq mi (202.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 8.95% White, 89.93% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.15% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races.
