South Oxford is an unorganized territory located in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 591 at the 2020 census. The unorganized territory encompasses the areas designated under state law as Albany Township, Mason Township, and Batchelder's Grant. Albany and Mason were formerly incorporated as towns. Albany disincorporated in 1937 while Mason disincorporated in 1935. Most of the unorganized territory lies within the White Mountain National Forest. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 95.7 square miles (247.8 km2), of which, 94.9 square miles (245.9 km2) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.9 km2) of it (0.76%) is water. Norway is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,077 at the 2020 census. It is home to Lake Pennesseewassee, a recreation area. History Fertile soil and abundant fauna surrounding the Pennessewasse Lake supported native people in the region for thousands of years. Gilead is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. Upon incorporation in 1804, it was named for the large quantity of Balm of Gilead trees in the town center. The population was 195 at the 2020 census. History In the late 1700s, Massachusetts sold land in what is now Maine to encourage the settlement of the area. In 1772, Oliver and John Peabody, of Andover, Massachusetts, and John and Samuel Bodwell of Methuen, Massachusetts, bought 6000 acres above Sudbury Canada.
