South Norwood Recreation Ground
South Norwood Recreation Ground is a park located in South Norwood in the London Borough of Croydon. In 1889, Croydon Corporation acquired the land and the borough surveyor estimated that it would cost just over £1,300 to lay out. Over a quarter of the projected cost was to install land drainage, which indicates that the site was quite wet. The recreation ground includes a sports area, football pitches, tennis court, floodlit courts, bowling green with pavilion and a children's playground. The park has an area of and 5.67 hectares. South Norwood
South Norwood is a district of south-east London, England, within the London Borough of Croydon, Greater London and formerly in the historic county of Surrey. It is located 7.8 miles (12.5 km) south-east of Charing Cross, north of Woodside and Addiscombe, east of Selhurst and Thornton Heath, south of Crystal Palace/ Upper Norwood and Anerley, and west of Elmers End and Penge. Together with Norwood New Town, it forms the electoral ward of South Norwood in the local authority of Croydon. The ward as a whole had a resident population in 2001 of just over 14,000. The south-eastern side of the district is dominated by the country park which opened in 1989. South Norwood Library
South Norwood Library is a purpose-built public library in South Norwood, South London. Also known locally as 'Brutalist Library' it stands in the London Borough of Croydon and is part of the Croydon Libraries arm of the council. The site on the corner of Selhurst Road and Lawrence Road first had a library built in 1897, which was replaced by the current building in 1966. Following a risk of moving the library and demolition of the building in 2019, the library service remains in the purpose-built 1968 library with reduced opening hours and a promise of renovation. The Friends of South Norwood Library campaign for the library service, supported by authors including Alex Wheatle. The Brutalist Library Campaign also worked alongside this campaign, with an aim to protect the building due to its architectural, historical and social merit. Brickfields Meadow
Brickfields Meadow is a meadow in Woodside in the London Borough of Croydon. It is located on the former site of a brickworks in Tennison Road and Dickensons Lane. The meadow covers an area of about 4.37 hectares. The meadow is not very well known to residents on Tennison Road, as the entrance is very secluded, beyond an EDF Energy transformer. The meadow includes: large pond where fishing is allowed, dipping platform, Buddleia Valley, grassland and woodland planting, small woodland area, and a children's play area which includes a mini maze and roundabout. Brickfields Meadow is the site of the defunct Woodside brickworks which the Council was able to take control of as a planning gain in the early 1990s. The meadow is somewhat unkempt, with an amount of rubbish scattered around the deep pond, filled with cloudy brown water. Heavers Meadow
Heavers Meadow is a meadow located in South Norwood and Selhurst in the London Borough of Croydon. South Norwood Recreation Ground is on the other side of the road. The meadow covers an area of 8 acres (3.34 hectares). With meadows there are not usually many facilities. Heavers is no exception; the only facility stated on the council's website is a footpath through a flood meadow. However the meadow is good for commuters from Tennison Road and the surrounding area who are going to Victoria as Selhurst railway station is on the other side of the meadow. There is no gate on the Tennison Road side so it is never closed at night. The path through the meadow is very popular with cyclists. South Norwood Country Park
South Norwood Country Park is a park in South Norwood, close to Elmers End and Birkbeck train stations. The historic Kent-Surrey border runs through the site, and since 1965 it has been located wholly in the London Borough of Croydon. It is a 47 hectare (116 acre) green space which opened in 1989. The park is a mix of countryside and parkland, and land formerly used for sewage farms serving the growing London population. Croydon Sports Arena, the home of Croydon F.C., is on the south-eastern edge of the park. There is also a car park and visitor centre, and a duck pond similar to the one at South Norwood Lake. South Norwood Lake and Grounds is a park in South Norwood in the London Borough of Croydon. The main entrance is in Woodvale Avenue while other entrances are located in Auckland Road and Sylvan Road. The area measures up to 28 acres (11.53 hectares). As well as the lake, there is a bowling green, tennis and basketball courts, football pitches, a cricket pitch, a playground and a trim trail. The park has active park rangers and has a park ranger's office with adjoining public toilets. The lake was originally created as a reservoir for the Croydon Canal, which, from 1809 to 1836, ran between Croydon and the Grand Surrey Canal at New Cross. , it is used by local anglers, who fish for carp, bream and perch among others, and Croydon Sailing Club.
