South Norwood Library
South Norwood Library is a purpose-built public library in South Norwood, South London. Also known locally as 'Brutalist Library' it stands in the London Borough of Croydon and is part of the Croydon Libraries arm of the council. The site on the corner of Selhurst Road and Lawrence Road first had a library built in 1897, which was replaced by the current building in 1966. Following a risk of moving the library and demolition of the building in 2019, the library service remains in the purpose-built 1968 library with reduced opening hours and a promise of renovation. The Friends of South Norwood Library campaign for the library service, supported by authors including Alex Wheatle. The Brutalist Library Campaign also worked alongside this campaign, with an aim to protect the building due to its architectural, historical and social merit. City Hall is a building in Southwark, London which previously served as the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) between July 2002 and December 2021 (GLA are now located at now located on Kamal Chunchie Way, London E16 1ZE). It is located in the London Borough of Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. In June 2020, the Greater London Authority started a consultation on proposals to vacate City Hall and move to The Crystal, a GLA owned property in Newham, at the end of 2021. The decision was confirmed on 3 November 2020 and the GLA vacated City Hall on 2 December 2021. The Southwark location is ultimately owned by the government of Kuwait. South Norwood Leisure Centre is a leisure centre located on Portland Road in South Norwood in Croydon, London. It contains a 25m sized swimming pool, teaching pool, 32 station gym and two studios. South Norwood Recreation Ground
South Norwood Recreation Ground is a park located in South Norwood in the London Borough of Croydon. In 1889, Croydon Corporation acquired the land and the borough surveyor estimated that it would cost just over £1,300 to lay out. Over a quarter of the projected cost was to install land drainage, which indicates that the site was quite wet. The recreation ground includes a sports area, football pitches, tennis court, floodlit courts, bowling green with pavilion and a children's playground. The park has an area of and 5.67 hectares. Taberner House
Taberner House housed many of the offices of Croydon London Borough Council until September 2013; the building was demolished in 2015. It was located in Croydon, London, close to the Croydon Town Hall. History Taberner House, which was designed by architect H. Thornley, with Allan Holt as borough engineer and Hugh Lea as the borough architect, was built between 1964 and 1967. Although the Croydon Corporation had needed extra space to supplement Croydon Town Hall since the 1920s, it was only with the imminent creation of the London Borough of Croydon that action was taken. It had its upper slab block narrowing towards both ends. It was named after Ernest Taberner , Town Clerk from 1937 to 1963. Jeremy Strong (born 18 November 1949) is a British writer credited with over 100 children's books. He previously worked in a bakery, where his job involved putting jam into doughnuts. He also worked as caretaker, a strawberry-picker and in an office for British Rail. Life and career Strong was born in New Eltham in London on the 18th November 1949. He attended Wyborne Primary School, east London, Haberdashers Aske's Boys' School and the University of York. After university he became a junior school teacher while beginning his writing career, publishing his first book ''Smith's Tail'', a picture story for young children in 1978. Strong left teaching in 1991 and has been writing full-time ever since. His humorous writing often makes use of his childhood and primary teaching experiences. Jamie Rix (born 27 April 1958) is an English children's author, television comedy writer, and media producer. He is best known for the book series ''Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids'' and '' The War Diaries of Alistair Fury''; both were adapted into award-winning children's television programmes. Career Rix studied Drama and English at the University of Kent, and worked as an assistant stage manager at Royal Court Theatre to learn how to direct plays. South Norwood
South Norwood is a district of south-east London, England, within the London Borough of Croydon, Greater London and formerly in the historic county of Surrey. It is located 7.8 miles (12.5 km) south-east of Charing Cross, north of Woodside and Addiscombe, east of Selhurst and Thornton Heath, south of Crystal Palace/ Upper Norwood and Anerley, and west of Elmers End and Penge. Together with Norwood New Town, it forms the electoral ward of South Norwood in the local authority of Croydon. The ward as a whole had a resident population in 2001 of just over 14,000. The south-eastern side of the district is dominated by the country park which opened in 1989.
