South Korea was the host nation and competed as ''Korea'' at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. 401 competitors, 269 men and 132 women, took part in 218 events in 27 sports. Yang Young-Ja (; born July 6, 1964) is a retired female table tennis player from South Korea. Table tennis career She won gold medals in women's doubles at the 1987 ITTF World Championships and the 1988 Summer Olympics, together with Hyun Jung-Hwa. Hyun Jung-hwa (; born October 6, 1969 in Busan, South Korea) is a retired table tennis player from South Korea who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics, and in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Career National South Korean table tennis player Hyun Jung-Hwa brought about the golden age of table tennis to Korea. She is one of an elite group of players who have won at least one gold medal in every discipline they were eligible to compete in at the World Table Tennis Championships. Her first gold medal came in the women's doubles (partnering Yang Young-Ja) at the 1987 World Table Tennis Championships in New Delhi. She followed it up by winning the mixed doubles title with Yoo Nam-Kyu at the 1989 World Table Tennis Championships in Dortmund. Archery At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Women's Individual
The women's individual was one of two events for women out of four total events on the archery programme at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Summary ; Preliminary ranking round Each archer shot a FITA round, consisting of 144 arrows split evenly between the distances of 70 metres, 60 metres, 50 metres, and 30 metres. The top 24 archers qualified for the next round. The Korean women, who had begun to show strength in the sport four years earlier, completely dominated the preliminary round. They took the three top places as Kim Soo-Nyung shattered the previous Olympic record for a FITA round. The Soviet Union also qualified three archers for the next round when all three placed in the top eight. Archery At The 1988 Summer Olympics
Four events were contested in archery at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. These events included team competitions for the first time in modern Olympic archery. Men's and women's individual competitions continued to be part of the schedule as well. The format for the individual competition was altered for the first time since the 1972 Summer Olympics. In Seoul, instead of all archers using the double FITA round to determine rankings, a sort of elimination plan was introduced. Each archer shot a single FITA round to determine initial rankings. Most archers were cut from the competition after this, with only 24 advancing. These archers then shot one-fourth the number of arrows normal for a FITA round, with these scores being used to drop more archers. This process was repeated until only 8 archers finished the fourth segment of the second round. Kim Soo-nyung
Kim Soo-nyung (born April 5, 1971 in Chungcheongbuk-do) is a former member of the South Korean Olympic archery team in 1988, 1992, and 2000. She has earned a total of four gold medals at the Olympics, one for the individual event in 1988 and three for the team event in 1988, 1992 and 2000. She won a further silver medal in 1992 and a bronze in 2000, both for the individual events. She retired after the 1992 Olympics to marry and raise two children, resuming her training in 1999, in the lead up to the 2000 Summer Olympics. She competed at the 1986 Asian Games winning a gold medal in the team event and a bronze in the individual. She also won two consecutive individual and team world championships in 1989 and 1991.
