South Fork Wenaha River
The South Fork Wenaha River is a tributary of the Wenaha River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The river begins in the Blue Mountains south of Bone Spring in Wallowa County near its border with Union County. From there it flows generally northeast through the Wenaha–Tucannon Wilderness of the Umatilla National Forest to meet the North Fork Wenaha River. The combined forks form the main stem Wenaha, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River. Named tributaries of the South Fork Wenaha from source to mouth are Milk and Trapper creeks followed by Cougar Canyon. Then come Jaussard and Elk creeks. Recreation The main path along the South Fork is the Wenaha River Trail, a route with trailheads at Troy and Timothy Springs. It runs parallel to the main stem between Troy and Wenaha Forks and roughly parallel to the South Fork upstream of the confluence. Cayuse Language
The Cayuse language (''Cailloux, Willetpoos'') is an extinct unclassified language formerly spoken by the Cayuse Native American tribe in the U.S. state of Oregon. The Cayuse name for themselves was ''Liksiyu'' (see Aoki 1998). Union County, Oregon
Union County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,196. Its county seat is La Grande. Union County comprises the La Grande, OR Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is one of the eight counties of eastern Oregon. Troy, Oregon
Troy is an unincorporated community in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States at the confluence of the Grande Ronde and Wenaha rivers. Troy is west of Flora on Oregon Route 3 near the Washington state line. It is known for its excellent steelhead fishing, and has an RV park and two fishing lodges, several Airbnbs, as well as the Troy Resort, and a restaurant, the Wenaha Bar and Grill. The only other service is a public elementary school. Troy began to form in the late 1890s, with the establishment in the area of a Mormon settlement called Nauvoo named after the more famous settlement in Illinois. A post office was opened in 1902, and a formal town was platted in 1910. In 1931, the name of the town was officially changed to Troy, presumably honoring a son of the area's original Mormon settlers, Troy Grinstead. North Fork Wenaha River
The North Fork Wenaha River is a tributary, long, of the Wenaha River in the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon. The river begins in the Blue Mountains in Columbia County, Washington, and flows generally southeast through the Wenaha–Tucannon Wilderness to meet the South Fork Wenaha River in Wallowa County, Oregon. The combined forks form the main stem Wenaha, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River. The river has only one named tributary, Deep Saddle Creek, which enters from the right slightly upstream of the Washington–Oregon border. The South Fork Wenaha River also enters from the right. Chinook salmon and steelhead spawn in the North Fork, and the wilderness near the river provides habitat for diverse species. Umatilla National Forest
The Umatilla National Forest, in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon and southeast Washington, covers an area of 1.4 million acres (5,700 km2). In descending order of land area the forest is located in parts of Umatilla, Grant, Columbia, Morrow, Wallowa, Union, Garfield, Asotin, Wheeler, and Walla Walla counties. (Columbia, Garfield, Asotin, and Walla Walla counties are in Washington, while the rest are in Oregon.) More than three-quarters of the forest lies in the state of Oregon. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer.
