South Florida Bulls Football
The South Florida Bulls football team represents the University of South Florida. The Bulls began playing in 1997 and compete in the American Athletic Conference (The American) of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team plays its home games at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. History Jim Leavitt era (1997–2010) In 1997, Jim Leavitt, previously the co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State, was hired as the team's first head coach. Their first team meeting was held under a shade tree, as the school had no proper football facilities on campus. The team started as a Division I-AA (now Division I FCS) independent for their first four seasons, finishing with a winning record three times and ranked in the AP Poll twice. 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl
The 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl featured the South Florida and the NC State Wolfpack. The game was the fourth edition to this bowl game, as well as the first shutout in the game's history. The game was played on Saturday, December 31, 2005, and kickoff was at 11:00 AM EST. It remained the only shutout South Florida ever suffered, until November 12, 2009 when South Florida lost to Rutgers 31–0 for its first shutout in South Florida's regular season. South Florida was in its first bowl in program history. The game was a defensive slugfest the entire way through. Quarterback Marcus Stone threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Brian Clark to put NC State up 7–0. With 19 seconds left in the half, Andre Brown scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The 2010 Meineke Car Care Bowl was the ninth edition of the college football bowl game, and was played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Louis Leo "Skip" Holtz Jr. (born March 12, 1964) is an American football coach who is the head coach for the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League (USFL). Previously, he was the head coach for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2013-2021), South Florida Bulls (2010–2012), East Carolina Pirates (2005–2009), and Connecticut Huskies (1994–1998). He has also served as an assistant coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks (1999–2004), Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1990–1993), Colorado State Rams (1989) and Florida State Seminoles (1987-1988). The 2007 Brut Sun Bowl, part of the 2007-08 NCAA football bowl games season, was played on December 31, 2007, at Sun Bowl Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, El Paso, between the South Florida Bulls and the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks were playing without quarterback Dennis Dixon, who finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting but who had season-ending ACL surgery in November. Redshirt freshman Justin Roper made his first collegiate start in place of Dixon and threw for four touchdowns to tie a Sun Bowl record and lead the Ducks to a 56–21 victory.
