Marlboro County is a county located in the Pee Dee region on the northern border of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 26,667. Its county seat is Bennettsville. The Great Pee Dee River runs through it. Marlboro County comprises the Bennettsville, SC Micropolitan Statistical Area. Marlboro County is home to the Pee Dee Indian Tribe. They are a relatively small American Indian tribe that has occupied the Pee Dee region for several centuries. Maxton, North Carolina
Maxton is a town in Robeson and Scotland counties, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,426 at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census. History The Maxton area was first settled in the 18th century. The community was incorporated in 1874 under the name of Shoe Heel. The name changed to Tilden, in honor of 1876 U.S. President candidate Samuel J. Tilden. The name reverted to Shoe Heel in 1881 before finally settling on Maxton in 1887. As agriculture in the industry consolidated into larger corporate ventures in the 1960s, Maxton's status as a local market town declined. Far away from major transportation links such as Interstate 95, its economy continued to wane in following decades without the arrival of new industry. South Carolina Highway 381 (SC 381) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It connects the towns in eastern Marlboro County. Route description SC 381 traverses from Blenheim at SC 38 to the North Carolina state line where it continues as North Carolina Highway 381 into Gibson, North Carolina. As a two-lane rural highway, it connects the towns of Clio and McColl. History The highway was established in 1930 as a new primary route from SC 38 in Blenheim to SC 9 in Clio. In 1931 or 1932, it was extended north to SC 30 (today U.S. Route 15 (US 15) and US 401) in McColl; and west to the community of Marlboro. In 1934, the western extension was dropped while it extended north again to the North Carolina state line. In 1940, SC 381 was extended west again to SC 382 in Scott, only to be truncated back in Blenheim by 1948. South Carolina Highway 68 (SC 68) is a state highway in Hampton County, in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It connects the Hampton– Varnille area with Yemassee and Interstate 95 (I-95). Route description The route of SC 68 travels generally in a northwest to southeast direction, beginning at a junction with U.S. Highway 278 (US 278 just south of Varnville. The highway travels in a nearly straight line for its entire length, paralleling the Port Royal and Augusta Railway (today the CSX Augusta Subdivision). The roadway passes through the small hamlet of Early Branch before widening to a four-lane configuration about north of the I-95 junction. Hamlet, North Carolina
Hamlet is a city in Richmond County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,042 at the 2020 census. History The area in Richmond County which presently includes Hamlet was originally known as Sandhills. The Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Railroad was extended through the area in 1866. The first house was constructed there in 1869. In 1872 the land was purchased by John Shortridge, an English immigrant who intended on building a textile mill along a creek. He renamed the locale Hamlet the following year, supposedly in homage to hamlets in the British Isles. He planted a sycamore tree to celebrate the occasion, which stood until 1946. A post office was established in 1876, and that year Shortridge sold a parcel of land to Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad, which completed its own line through Hamlet by the following year.
