South Bristol (UK)
South Bristol is the part of Bristol, England south of the Bristol Avon. It is almost entirely made up of the areas of the city historically in Somerset, and since the abolition of the county Avon, consists of the southern suburbs in the county of Bristol. Definitions sometimes also include areas of North Somerset, including Long Ashton, Nailsea and Backwell. History South Bristol originated from the area of Redcliffe, once a separate town. In 1373 Redcliffe became part of Bristol to form the city and county of Bristol. In the 19th century South Bristol expanded to absorb Bedminster and Brislington. Although it has historically and continues to this day, to be smaller than North Bristol, in the 20th century new housing estates such as Hengrove, Hartcliffe and Withywood significantly increased the size of South Bristol. Bristol () is a city, ceremonial county and unitary authority in England. Situated on the River Avon, it is bordered by the ceremonial counties of Gloucestershire to the north and Somerset to the south. Bristol is the most populous city in South West England. Bishopsworth is the name of both a wards of the United Kingdom, council ward of the city of Bristol in the United Kingdom, and a suburb of the city which lies within that ward. Bishopsworth contains many council estates. As well as the suburb of Bishopsworth, the ward contains the areas of Bedminster Down, Highridge and Withywood. A370 Road
The A370 is a primary road in England running from the A4 Bath Road, near Bristol Temple Meads railway station to Weston-super-Mare before continuing to the village of East Brent in Somerset. A more direct route from Bristol to East Brent is the A38. Route Within Bristol urban area, the road begins at Bath Road roundabout, at the busy junction with A4 near Temple Meads. It then follows the new cut of River Avon west to Cumberland basin, via Bedminster. From here on, it begins to head south-westwards out of the city. It first bypasses Long Ashton, then passes through Flax Bourton, Backwell, Brockley, Cleeve, Congresbury and Hewish, beyond which it crosses the M5 motorway at Junction 21. Windmill Hill, Bristol
Windmill Hill is situated in the south of the city of Bristol and is often referred to as being part of Bedminster. It is a predominantly residential location, and became popular in the 1990s and 2000s with students, artists and environmentalists, often sharing rented accommodation. The area has mainly Victorian terraced houses though there are also two residential tower blocks Polden and Holroyd House. In the early years of the 21st century the area started undergoing gentrification which has increased house prices in the area. Windmill Hill remains a creative and community driven neighbourhood. Stockwood
Stockwood is a residential area and council ward in south Bristol, between Whitchurch and Brislington, and west of the Somerset town of Keynsham. Geography Stockwood forms an outermost southern suburb of the city with much green space; the upper part of Stockwood is set on a plateau surrounded by pasture and the lower part a wooded valley, bordered to its west by the old Bristol and North Somerset Railway rail line which is now a cycle way. The upper estate was built in the 1960s as private housing, together with sheltered elderly accommodation. On a green-space ridge in front of the pantile-style shopping-precinct there is a good view of the city and events such as the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Southville, Bristol
Southville is an inner city ward of Bristol, England, on the south bank of the River Avon northwest of Bedminster. Most of the area's houses were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for workers in the Bristol coal mining industry or the tobacco factories of W. D. & H. O. Wills, homes of the eponymous "Wills Girls". The world headquarters of Imperial Tobacco, the world's fourth largest international tobacco company, used to be here, but moved to Ashton. Southville was also a centre for the tanning industry. The area was bombed in the second world war, with many streets losing one or more houses. Southville was the unintended target of the many short-falling bombs aimed at the adjoining dock facilities and traffic.
