South Australian Railway Company
The South Australian Railway Company was an attempt in the 1840s by private capitalists to establish a railway in the infant colony of South Australia. The company was based in London, where most of the capital was to be raised, £25,000 in the first instance. There were two or three local directors, since in the days before electric undersea cable telegraph, London was too far away for effective control. Routes The first route from Adelaide to Port Adelaide was only 6 miles long, quite straight and flat and suitable for horse drawn operation. The initial line was to be single track, with frequent crossing loops. A longer route to the Burra copper mines was proposed later on. Directors British directors (possibly incomplete): G. F. South Australia (commonly abbreviated as SA) is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It covers some of the most arid parts of the country. William Giles (colonial Manager)
William Giles (27 December 1791 – 11 May 1862), occasionally referred to as William Giles, sen. to distinguish him from his eldest son, was the third colonial manager of the South Australian Company, and a South Australian politician, who was prominent in the founding of the colony of South Australia. Early life Giles was born on 27 December 1791 in Great Staughton, Huntingdonshire, England, and was educated at Kimbolton School in nearby Cambridgeshire. Rail Transport In South Australia
The first railway in colonial South Australia was a line from the port of Goolwa on the River Murray to an ocean harbour at Port Elliot, which first operated in December 1853, before its completion in May 1854. Today the state has broad gauge suburban railways in Adelaide, a number of country freight lines, and key standard gauge links to other states. Gauge In 1847, the South Australian Parliament passed an act confirming the adoption of the standard gauge of for Australia. South Australia was the first state to do so. In 1848 the Colonial Secretary in London, Lord Grey, recommended the Australian colonies all adopt standard gauge. However, this advice did not prevail. William Younghusband
William Younghusband (1819 – 5 May 1863), sometimes known as "William Younghusband junior", was a businessman and politician in the colony of South Australia; one of the promoters of the Murray River Steam Navigation Company, which enabled Captain Cadell in 1853 to win the £4000 bonus offered by the Government of South Australia for the initiation of steam communication on the Murray. Samuel Stocks Junior
Samuel Stocks ( – 8 March 1863) and his son Samuel Stocks, jun ( – 3 February 1850) were businessmen in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. Stocks was a citizen of Heaton Mersey, near Manchester, where he was senior partner of the bleaching firm of Stocks and Tait which failed during the Panic of 1847. He contested, unsuccessfully, the Stockport (UK Parliament constituency), parliamentary seat of Stockport before migrating to South Australia. He arrived in Adelaide via Sydney on the ''Dorset'' on 27 August 1843. At some stage he returned to England and arrived back in Adelaide with his wife Barbara on the ''Zealous'' on 26 May 1848. William Peacock (businessman)
Peacock & Son was a tanning and wool-brokering business in the early days of South Australia. Three members of the family were notable public figures: William Peacock (c. 1790 – 20 January 1874) was a successful businessman and one of the colony's first parliamentarians. His eldest son Joseph Peacock carried on the family business and was a member of parliament. His youngest son Caleb Peacock was a member of parliament and Mayor of Adelaide from 1875 to 1877, the first such born in the Colony. John Bentham Neales
John Bentham Neales (13 June 1806 – 31 July 1873), frequently referred to as "J. Bentham Neales" or "Bentham Neales", was a businessman and politician in the early days of South Australia, by some regarded as the "Father of Mining in South Australia". Neales was born in Plymouth, England, the son of Elizabeth ''née'' Bentham. Both parents died when he was very young, leaving him to be brought up by an uncle. He migrated to South Australia on the ''Eden'', arriving on 24 June 1838. Career Neales began business in Adelaide as a general merchant, then an auctioneer, taking over much of the business of Robert Cock. Eliezer Levi Montefiore
Eliezer Levi Montefiore (1820 – 22 October 1894) was a businessman, art enthusiast, and the first director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Montefiore was born in Barbados to merchant Isaac Jacob Levi (who also had a home in Brussels) and his wife Esther Hannah Montefiore, who was first cousin to Sir Moses Montefiore. His elder brother was Jacob Levi Montefiore, who was for some years a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both brothers adopted the name "Levi Montefiore". Montefiore, who was known for his passion for art, arrived in Adelaide by 1843, and married his cousin Esther Hannah Barrow Montefiore (Joseph Barrow Montefiore's daughter) there on 3 May 1848. George Hall (Australian Politician)
George Hall, M.L.C., (2 March 1811 – 28 January 1867) often styled "Captain Hall", was a South Australian shipping agent, company director and politician. He was born at Bromley, Kent and left school at an early age to become a merchant seaman, and later captained ships on the East Indian and West Indian trade routes. His involvement with the South Australian Company began when David McLaren, manager of the South Australian Company, controversially contracted him to transport goods for the Company from Singapore to Port Adelaide in the "Guiana", becoming, on 7 October 1840, the first to unload goods at the new wharf. Captain John Hart CMG (25 February 1809 – 28 January 1873) was a South Australian politician and a Premier of South Australia. Early life The son of journalist/newspaper publisher John Harriott Hart and Mary Hart ''née'' Glanville, John was born on 25 February 1809 probably at 23 Warwick Lane off Newgate Street, London, and baptised at Christ Church Greyfriars, London. At 12 years of age he first went to sea, visiting Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania, Australia) in September 1828 in the ''Magnet''. Jacob Hagen
Jacob Hagen (29 January 1809 – 24 January 1870) was a businessman involved in many business ventures in the colony of South Australia. He served in the Legislative Council from September 1843 to February 1851. History Jacob Hagen was born in Mill Street, Bermondsey a son of Jacob Hagen (1776–1843) and his wife Mary Hagen née Fell (1785–1858) who married in 1807. He was educated in Southgate, Middlesex. John Baker (Australian Politician)
John Baker (28 December 1813 – 19 May 1872) was an early South Australian pastoralist and politician. He was the second Premier of the colony of South Australia, succeeding Boyle Travers Finniss; however, he only held office for 12 days from 21 August to 1 September 1857 before being succeeded by the third Premier of the colony, Robert Torrens.
