South American Championship 1919
The 1919 Copa América, South American Championship of Nations was the third continental championship for South American national football teams. It was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 11 to 29 May 1919. The participating countries were Brazil national football team, Brazil, Argentina national football team, Argentina, Chile national football team, Chile and Uruguay national football team, Uruguay as the defending champion. After finishing tied in the group standings on points, host Brazil beat Uruguay in the playoff match to win their first title. The playoff was the longest match in the competition's history, and under current rules, will remain so indefinitely: with the scores tied 0-0 after 90 minutes had expired, both captains and the referee agreed to play an extra time (football), extra time period of two 30 minute periods, meaning the playoff match lasted 150 minutes. Arthur Friedenreich
Arthur Friedenreich (18 July 1892 – 6 September 1969) was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward. He was nicknamed ''The Tiger'' or ''The Original "Black" Pearl'', and was arguably the sport's first outstanding mixed-race player. Amílcar Barbuy (29 March 1893 – 24 August 1965) was an Italian Brazilian football player and manager. A talented and well-rounded midfielder, he was known for his commanding presence, pinpoint tackling, ability to read the game, powerful kicks and great long passes and was one of the greatest players of Corinthians. Isabelino Gradín (8 July 1897 – 21 December 1944) was a Uruguayan footballer and athlete. He was considered to be one of the greatest footballers in the early era of Uruguayan football and is regarded as one of the greatest Uruguayan players before the Uruguayan win at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. Carlos Scarone (10 November 1888 – 12 May 1965) was a Uruguayan footballer who played as forward. Despite he played in several clubs of Argentina and Uruguay, Scarone is mostly known for his tenure on Nacional, where he stayed nine years, scoring 152 goals in 227 matches played. At club level, Scarone won a total of 23 titles (all of them with Nacional), 17 domestic league and cups and 6 international cups. At international level, Scarone played in 25 matches for the Uruguay national football team from 1909 to 1922.
