South African Type XE1 Tender
The South African type XE1 tender was a steam locomotive tender from the pre- Union era in the Cape of Good Hope. The Type XE1 tender first entered service in 1902, as tenders to the second batch of ten Mastodon type steam locomotives which were acquired by the Cape Government Railways in that year. South African Class 8 4-8-0
The South African Railways Class 8 4-8-0 of 1902 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Cape of Good Hope. In 1902 and 1903, the Cape Government Railways placed 23 8th Class steam locomotives with a Mastodon type wheel arrangement in service, three on the Cape Western System, eight on the Cape Midland System and twelve on the Cape Eastern System. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered, but retained their Class 8 classification.Classification of S.A.R. The Union of South Africa ( nl, Unie van Zuid-Afrika; af, Unie van Suid-Afrika; ) was the historical predecessor to the present-day Republic of South Africa. It came into existence on 31 May 1910 with the unification of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River colonies. The South African Railways Class 8A 4-8-0 of 1902 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union of South Africa, Union era in Transvaal Colony, Transvaal. The South African Railways Class 6E 4-6-0 of 1898 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Orange Free State. In 1898, the ''Oranje-Vrijstaat Gouwerment-Spoorwegen'' ordered its final six new Cape 6th Class locomotives. When British forces invaded the Orange Free State during the Second Boer War, these locomotives were taken over by the Imperial Military Railways. South African Class 6B 4-6-0
The South African Railways Class 6B of 1897 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Cape of Good Hope. In 1897 and 1898, the Cape Government Railways placed a third batch of 55 6th Class 4-6-0 steam locomotives in service, 32 on its Western System, 21 on its Midland System and two on its Eastern System. During the Second Boer War, seven were transferred to the Imperial Military Railways on loan, and in 1907 four were sold to the Benguela Railway in Angola. In 1912, when the remaining 51 locomotives were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered and designated Class 6B.
