''Soul UK'' is the seventh studio album by English singer-songwriter Beverley Knight. The album was released on 4 July 2011, and features covers of British soul songs that inspired her whilst growing up. The album includes a live DVD of the tracks, filmed on 7 April at the Porchester Hall in London. Background In the press release for ''Soul UK'', Knight explained her choice to make and release an album of cover versions. She stated "I gave a lot of thought to choosing the songs I wanted to interpret for this album and it was great fun putting my own flavour and twist on tracks by some of the fantastic UK artists who preceded me and inspired me. A lot these artists opened doors for both myself and many others, and many of them are still going strong – so the album is, in part, a thank you to them. Beverley Knight (born Beverley Anne Smith, 22 March 1973) is an English recording artist and musical theatre actress. She released her first album, ''The B-Funk'', in 1995. Stock Aitken Waterman (abbreviated as SAW) are an English songwriting and record production trio consisting of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman. The trio had great success from the mid-1980s through the early 1990s. SAW is considered one of the most successful songwriting and producing partnerships of all time, scoring more than 100 UK top 40 hits, selling 40 million records and earning an estimated £60 million (about $104 million). Norman Washington "Junior" Giscombe (born 6 June 1957) is an English singer-songwriter often known as Junior who was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. He is best known for his 1982 hit single, "Mama Used to Say". Career Giscombe was born in Wandsworth, London, England, and was a backing vocalist with Linx between 1980 and 1982. When turning towards a solo career, he was first billed simply as Junior. He scored a No. 7 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1982, with "Mama Used to Say". His follow-up single, "Too Late" also made the top 20 in the UK. "Southern Freeez" produced by John Rocca was the first single released by British dance band Freeez from their debut album, also entitled '' Southern Freeez''. The album was self-funded by member John Rocca and initially released on his Pink Rhythm record label before the group was signed to Beggars Banquet. Song information Freeez gained far higher recognition and sales with this record than with the previous single, " Keep in Touch". "Southern Freeez" reached number one in the blues and soul chart and spent two weeks at number 8 of the UK Singles Chart during early 1981 ("Keep In Touch" reached number 49). Guest Ingrid Mansfield Allman provided vocals. The titular Southern Freeez is attested to derive from a dance move, "The Freeze," used by clubbers in the "Royalty" club, Southgate in the early 1980s. Nellee Hooper (born Paul Andrew Hooper on 15 March 1963) is a British record producer, remixer and songwriter known for his work with many major recording artists beginning in the late 1980s. Trevor Beresford Romeo OBE, (born 26 January 1963) better known as Jazzie B, is a British DJ and music producer. He is the founder of Soul II Soul. Life and career Jazzie was born in London UK to parents of Antiguan descent in Hornsey, London, the ninth of ten children, several of whom began running sound systems in the 1960s and 1970s. At age 18, Jazzie was working for cockney pop skiffle legend Tommy Steele, as a tape operator. He had his first gig in 1977 working with friends under the Rastafari name Jah Rico. Rose Windross
Rose Windross originally began as a singer and songwriter in the UK reggae scene. She recorded her first album, ''Just Rose'', on the Ital Records label when she was still at school. Windross both wrote and recorded Soul II Soul's first single "Fairplay" for Jazzie B, which is featured on the album, ''Club Classics Vol. One''. In the US, although the single was pressed, "Fairplay" was never officially released as a single there, but it appeared on the B-side to the single "Feel Free". The ''Daily Express'' is a national daily United Kingdom middle-market newspaper printed in tabloid format.
