Soroptimist International (SI) is a global volunteer service organization for women with nearly 72,000 members in 121 countries worldwide. According to Soroptimist.org, their mission statement says that, "Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment." The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin ''soror'' meaning sister, and optima meaning best. Soroptimist is interpreted as ‘'the best for women’'. Violet Richardson Ward
Violet Richardson Ward (August 27, 1888 - August 1979), B. A., M. A., was the founding president of Soroptimist International and a pioneer in American physical education for schoolchildren. Early life Violet Richardson was born in New Jersey on August 27, 1888, the daughter of John Mead Richardson and Lucy Shipgood, who emigrated to the United States from England in 1885. She received her early education at home, and then in a number of schools as her family relocated frequently. She received a scholarship to attend the Pratt and Carnegie Institutes of Art. In 1907 the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. She finished high school education at the San Francisco Girls High School. After graduation she enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley as an art major, but soon moved to health and physical education. Thelma Eileen Jarrett
Thelma Eileen Jarrett MBE (25 February 190513 August 1987) was an Australian Soroptimist. She was the first non-British person to become vice-president of the Federation of Soroptimist Clubs of Great Britain and Ireland, a position she held from 1969 to 1971, and from 1972 to 73, she was its president. Early life Thelma Jarrett was born on 25 February 1905 in Gladesville, Sydney. Her father, Robert Loxton Jarrett, was an accountant; her mother was Elizabeth Hill. Jarrett attended Fintona Girls' School in Camberwell, Melbourne and had two stints as senior geography mistress at Tintern Ladies' College (1927–36; 1938–39). Suzanne Noël
Suzanne Blanche Gros Noël (1878–1954), also known as Madame Noël, was one of the world’s first Plastic surgery, plastic surgeons and the first female plastic surgeon in the world. She was known for her efficient face lift technique, the “petite operation.” Noël was also a very active feminist, a philosophy which was considered radical for a practicing cosmetic surgeon. Ernestine Evans Mills (née Bell; 1871 – 6 February 1959) was an English metalworker and enameller who became known as an artist, writer and suffragette. Caring For Carers Ireland
Family Carers Ireland is a non-profit organisation based in Dublin, Leinster. History It started as The Carers Association in 1987, and was the first national carers association for lobbying government, representing family carers and advocate for carers rights in Ireland. The national census of 2006 shows that there are 160,917 people who stated that they are carers and almost 41,000 of these carers are providing 43 or more hours of care each week. The association estimates that carers provide 194 million hours of care a year to the value of about 2.5 billion Euros to the economy. Approximately 33,000 full-time carers qualify for the Carers Allowance from the government. This Allowance is means tested.
