House Of Sorkočević
The House of Sorgo (in Italian) or Sorkočević (in Serbo-Croatian) was the name of a noble family of the Republic of Ragusa. Name Known as ''de Sorgo'', ''Surgo'', ''Sorco'' and ''Surco'' in Italian, their name is derived from sorghum. History According to the ''Annals'', the Sorgo was a grain-trading and ship-owning family who immigrated from Albania via Kotor in 1272, and were ennobled in 1292 after bringing sorghum during a famine. They hailed from the Cape of Rodon (''di Redoni d' Albania antichi''), according to a later entry in the ''Annals''. However, "Vita de Dobroslavo", the progenitor, is mentioned in 1253, and died before 1281. Vita had seven sons and two daughters. He had a son, Dobrosclavus, who was mentioned between 1274 and 1283, when he died. In 1527, Vlaho Sorgo, a patrician in Venice, recruited Jacobus Rizo as a doctor against the plague. Luka Sorkočević
Count Luka Sorkočević ( it, Luca Sorgo; January 13, 1734 – September 11, 1789) was composer from the Republic of Ragusa. His music has been preserved, like other Sorkočević family possessions, in the archives of the Dubrovnik Franciscan convent. He is known as the first Croatian symphonist. Biography Luka (Lukša) Sorkočević was born in Dubrovnik and received an extensive education. His music teacher was the Italian composer Giuseppe Valenti, who was ''maestro di cappella'' of Dubrovnik Cathedral in the 1750s. He continued his education in Rome where he studied musical composition with Rinaldo di Capua. Later, Sorkočević married a girl from the Luccari (Lukarević) family and held several posts in various branches of Dubrovnik politics and society. During his relatively brief stint in Vienna as the ambassador to the imperial court he met several leading composers of his time, like Gluck and Haydn, and the famous poet Metastasio – a valuable experience for his later ... Antun Sorkočević
Antun Sorkočević ( it, Antonio Sorgo, french: Antoine Sorgo; 12 December 1775 – February 1841) was a diplomat, writer, composer and member of Ragusan nobility (''chevalier des odres de Saint Maurice et de Saint Lazare demeurant a Paris''). He was Medo Pucić's cousin, and a good friend of Marko Bruerović. He also held the position of Mayor of Dubrovnik during the French Empire. Sorkočević was born in Dubrovnik. His father was Luka Sorkočević and mother, Paula Bonda (1743-1811). Like his father, he was a composer. Antun studied in Rome, and after 1806 led the Republic of Ragusa's diplomatic representation in Paris where he was the last ambassador of the Republic in France, where he spent 35 years of his life. In Paris he wrote ''Postanak i propast Republike Dubrovačke'' (The Rise and Fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik) in which he proposed that Dubrovnik should join Boka Kotorska, Montenegro and Serbia to make it one nation. Elena Pucić-Sorkočević
Countess Elena Pucić-Sorkočević, also Elena Pozza-Sorgo (c. 1784–1865) was the first female composer in the Republic of Ragusa ( Dubrovnik), located in today's southern Croatia. She was born Elena Lujza Ranjina, and married Nikola Lucijan Pucić-Sorkočević (1772–1855). They had two children: Marina, who married Matej Natali and Lucijan Pucić-Sorkočević. After the fall of the Republic, musical performances were mostly held in private houses of the noble families. Elena was the first female in Croatia whose compositions have been preserved She has a total of 6 completed compositions, one of them in sketches that are kept at the Franciscan monastery in Dubrovnik. Her compositions were not meant for concert works but rather epistles written to loved ones as expressions of her spirit.
