Sophia Awards
The Sophia Awards are the Portuguese cinematographic and film awards, assigned annually, which aim to recognize the best national productions. Its name was chosen in honor of the Portuguese poet and writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen and also because " Sophia" is a classic Greek name which means "wisdom" . History The awards were instituted in 2012, a year after the creation of the Portuguese Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The president, Paulo Trancoso, said that the main idea was to create a form of recognizing and congratulate the excellence in cinema in the country having in mind other annual awards in Europe like the Goya Awards in Spain or the César Awards in France. Cinema Of Portugal
The Cinema of Portugal started with the birth of the medium in the late 19th century. Cinema was introduced in Portugal in 1896 with the screening of foreign films and the first Portuguese film was '' Saída do Pessoal Operário da Fábrica Confiança'', made in the same year. The first movie theater opened in 1904 and the first scripted Portuguese film was ''O Rapto de Uma Actriz'' (1907). The first all-talking sound film, '' A Severa'', was made in 1931. Starting in 1933, with ''A Canção de Lisboa'', the Golden Age would last the next two decades, with films such as ''O Pátio das Cantigas'' (1942) and ''A Menina da Rádio'' (1944). ''Listen'' is a 2020 Portuguese drama film written and directed by Ana Rocha de Sousa that stars Lúcia Moniz and Sophia Myles. The film premiered in the Horizon section of the 77th Venice International Film Festival, in which it won the Special Jury Prize. It was selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. However, in December 2020 the film was disqualified, as more than half of its dialogue was in English. The ''Teatro Nacional de São Carlos'' () (''National Theatre of Saint Charles'') is an opera house in Lisbon, Portugal. It was opened on June 30, 1793 by Queen Maria I as a replacement for the Tejo Opera House, which was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
